The economics of farm /estate forestry ????

Post on the woodland management section of arbtalk.co.uk forums and then come back. You'll get some very well informed answers. But at a guess I'd say the short answer is you'll lose money if its all planted on banks and it needs hand felling and winching to extract.

    Robot Lawnmowers

We have a husqy 450x on our caravan park, running almost at its maximum area until we see how well it copes. Sam turner's did the wire install and it's been spot on. The grass looks amazing and saves us an absolute fortune in man hours each year even though we ran a 7ft cut ransomes parkway...

    Short disc suppliers

We've got a set of AMJ discs coming from @Guy this week hopefully. So no direct experience yet but if they work as they should they'll be excellent value for money.

    Anyone used this company!

Has anybody had any dealings with this company recently? Are they trustworthy enough to pay in full in advance? Looking at a set of 2.7m short discs from them but its hard to convince ourselves to pay it all then wait maybe a fortnight for it to arrive!

What do you think of straw and pigs?

We have pigs on slats and straw, we get less fighting, tailbiting, illness and ultimately death in the slatted sheds than we do in the straw pens. The slatted finrone flat decks we have for weaners almost completely eliminated our antibiotic use from day 1 unlike when we had them in straw. I...

    Transport of pigs

I do believe it needs to be a separate Compartment. Woodheads were happy to take our sheep and pigs on the same wagon and I think we take some for our own use to the abatoir in one run but with a separator door in.

Large amount Coppiced hedgerows for Biomass-- Value???

Ideally. Tree shear it down with an excavator or chainsaw it etc but then pile it up (neatly if possible) let it dry out and then you can just pull up next to the pile and run the lot through a chipper.

Large amount Coppiced hedgerows for Biomass-- Value???

Expect to pay £120-150 an hour for a trailed large crane fed chipper on a 200hp+ tractor. In virgin timber you’re talking 20- 25t an hour. Maybe 15-20 in hedgerow clearance. We’ve used one a few times for just that and it feeds into our chip boiler just fine. Thorn burns beautifully in it! Leave...

How do you deal with a situation like this

Don’t see the issue. Firstly if he doesn’t want you on it over winter he should pay for it 12 months. And secondly Our heavily sheep grazed overwintered land always yields the best first cut as long as there’s some fert in there once the weathers right. He sounds like one of our local big...

    B and B pigs

We’re only a 200 sow indoor unit but it’d take little effort to remove the sow crates and change the partitions for weaners. And certainly less effort to dig out the other shed for a slurry pit as planned and stick weaners in instead of fitting out for more sow crates. We finish 120ish (only...

    B and B pigs

Interesting. Did he have the benefit of muck for straw deals, bore holes for water etc? Trouble for us is we’re sort of in a transitional period where we either need to upgrade our farrowing facilities, turn it into weaner accommodation or sack it off completely! there is also our grower...

    B and B pigs

Is there anybody on here who’s gone from breeding and finishing their own pigs to B&B for somebody else? We have the facilities and the experience but we only know arable farmers who have b&b from no pigs at all so not a good comparison.

Will SpaceX provide the Solution to Rural Broadband?

Three HomeFi is the answer to rural broadband if you have good 4g signal as we do. Should be up from sub 1meg speed to 12 or more without trouble. And for £24 a month for 40gb limit. Mobile technologies will probably advance faster than the government fund the telecom companies putting in...

    Woodchip - Self Supplier

I know exactly what you mean, they’re just not very powerful on anything other than straight lengths. Try lifting the length up, that can force it to feed sometimes. Haven’t used ours in over 10 months now though. Managed to time the contractor with the big chipper successfully since we...
