    Drenching Cattle

Best to do a few dung samples first. I've learned from that this year. Had bought fluke drench and wormer for winter housing. Was waiting for the right timing for dosing but had a cow looking under the weather, head low and stretched out didn't come to the feed fence. After a drench of...

    Simmental AI bull

Is there a reason for A.I.ing at 24 months? Could you A.I them in February, get something easier calving for there first calf. Being simmentals they should handle calving at 2. If the heifer losses a calf when calving at 3 that's some expense to deal with. Where as calving at 2 you can give them...

Been said to me that he's suitable for heifers. Sire (Brocca Kingfisher) and grandsire (Amaris) both very easy calving. Looking to get straws of the grandsire, as Plato's other grandsire (Hilltop Hector) is the sire of my stock bull and with keeping daughters of him lessons the chance of me...

    Cost for solar system battery

We're not off grid. When we did the install back in 2013 we were restricted to the amount of power we could generate to 3.7kw as Orkney was producing to much power with turbines/panels to what the sub sea connection could handle. Or so they said. Been some big turbines been put up since and more...

    Cost for solar system battery

We had a salesman by this afternoon looking at our 3.5kw solar system that has been running for 9 years now. I was in the mind of putting a battery into the system which the salesman said was possible. He said I would need 2 x2.4kw batteries and a control unit thing(can't mind the technical term...

Never used Sauveur yet only got 5 straws to make up an order back when I first got the tank. Hoping to use him with a pure cow next year if I can get to her before the bull does. Had one calf to Boxster. Cow was in very good condition as she had aborted her calf the year before. Calf was...

I've been getting on better with the AI by waiting about 3 hours after they have been doing all their jumping about and are more settled with themselves. Also found using a mineral drench or a good go of powder bulling minerals leading up to heat makes a better heat and easier to serve. The...

Thats pretty crud on Genus' part. Even though I'm not successful every time it's been more successful for myself to do it. Can time it far better and not have to wait for a time slot that's not favourable. And it's a bit more satisfying when you see the calf on the ground and you know that you...

Yeah. If anything bulling in the spring before turn out I usually give it a go. Got a variety o stuff in the tank so try and pick something to suit the cow. If it's a maternal type I'll use something with a bit o muscle but if it's a muscle type cow I'll go with something plainer to try and keep...

Think I have 5 of Tyson left in me tank. Wished I had gotten a few more when I did get them. Only have the 2 from Hashtag at the moment and they seem to be doing fine.

Do my own AI. Did 2 heifers last year to Hashtag, one heifer I did a repeat on but held fine then. Did that same 2 again this year to Hashtag when they came to their first heat after calving, and both held first time. At times AI is pretty frustrating though.

Lochhead Tyson don't think you can get him anymore he's good for heifers, might be a bit worried about your limx blues to fanfare though. You'll need to keep a good eye on them I would think. Don't know about the other bulls you've mentioned there. If your looking at getting some french stuff...

Sorry, I missed it too. Had the bairns at a sheep sale yesterday. Would be good if the blonde society would do a sales report after a sale. Often wondered how a sale went and how the prices were. Only see the champion and reserve price at times. Catherine MacGregor puts up on her site after...

😳 That's a good lot of kye. Be a job keeping on top of all that. Do you have many workers to help out? Have 3 stock bulls. Probably 1 to many, it's more down to field management. And if anything thing went wrong with one we will still have plenty of cover for the cows.

Try to calf up to 60 cows. Always seems to be a few problems and don't quite get to that. Such is farming!!. Put a lot of x heifers this year to a Saler bull that I've had for a couple of years now. For the pures I AI them. Might see how the Hashtag bull calf turns out might use him on heifers...

Cheers. Yeah happy with them. They've done well considering we've had a hellish dry summer. Something we're not used to up here in Orkney. It's certainly affected grass growth. The. Cows have had to do with very little grass. Don't do any creep feeding untill they come in for the winter. So not...
