We initially had this discussion but decided it would be same price replacing the whole starter motor as replacing brushes , as in theory labour time would be less but parts more.

I'm not a mechanic and I didn't have time / inclination. I needed it for contract slug pelleting and can earn the £60/hr labour charges doing that.

Would it be sensible to get a quote for a job like this in the future? , To ensure I don't get a nasty shock, although I assumed it wouldn't take as long as I was billed for.

You are correct it did cost £80 for parts, and the problem was diagnosed straight away. The labour cost was £184 (3 1/4 hrs). Giving a grand total of £264 plus vat.
