From some conversations I’ve had recently, I’m getting the feeling there’s some panick in businesses that rely on farming customers that large scale SFI options could become very popular.
For instance, suggesting that it wouldn’t be moral, or that you wouldn’t be a real “farmer” if you take...
What’s the preferred method for sowing grass seed now days? I will want to sow into cultivated wheat stubble. I am thinking of getting a Vaderstad BioDrill 180 to mount on our Rapid box drill, or is a grass rake/seeder combination better?
I’m thinking I need one to relieve compaction now I am moving away from ploughing.
I like the idea of low disturbance, but is that possible combined with removing compaction?
Are leading discs important?
How many legs/meter?
Do some manufacturers make a better job of it than others?
I am thinking of using options IPM2 (flower rich grass margins but over whole fields) and AHL2 (winter bird food). These would not be rotated, but kept on the same fields for 2 or 3 years. Any thoughts on how this may impact APT?
I have been doing these options (AB8 and AB9) in a small way...
We are in discussions with an energy storage company. It’s got to the stage where they are asking for a signed letter of authority to allow them to enquire about obtaining a grid connection.
Are there any reasons why I shouldn’t give permission?
I’m thinking they should have a time limit of say...

AHDB chair says he “is keen not to side with either farmers or retailers.”
He also said “Without farmers on side, inevitably we do not have assurance.”
And then goes on to say RT was “not at high risk of being discarded”
I’ll counter his comments with:
We farmers fund AHDB, so they surly...
Thanks Andrew. I respect your honesty.
I’m sure a few at the top table of the NFU didn’t want you to say all that. It gives quite a different perspective on the meeting when compared with Minette Batters vlog.
I've just watched Olly Blogs latest Youtube video and he mentions he attended the Conservative conference NFU fringe meeting where George Eustice was answering questions.
Apparently, GE said that culling pigs could help the industry by reducing the supply and therefore pushing up prices!!!
When...
The pulley and slip clutch that drives the bubble up auger (see picture) wobbles slightly. It looks as if the shaft is bent. The bearings are fine and everything turns freely. I can’t imagine how the shaft could have bent. Any ideas how it might have happened? I don’t know how long it’s been...
I’ve got about 6ha of linseed that’s a bit too weedy for my liking (resistant rye grass mainly). My options seem to be , accept the weed return, or spray it off now and accept the loss (maybe 2t/ha), or harvest it now in some fashion.
Any ideas?
A solar farm developer has asked for permission to apply for a grid connection for our farm.
This initial bit of applying for the grid connection seems harmless enough. No commitment from us to take it further, but I guess we are tied to this firm if we wish to go for it.
We are interested in...
I'm thinking of planting a black oat cover crop. A brief look on the internet suggests the seed costs around £2/kg which seems outrageously expensive. Is that what I should expect to pay?
I know we are supposed to use these to help decide whether to spray grain stores with insecticide pre harvest, but i have never had the confidence to trust them and always spray. I have never had a grain store insect problem and don't want one.
But, spraying insecticide when it's not needed is...
I needed something to sow some AB9 wild flower mix. My Vaderstad is a box drill so is not great for just 20 kg of seed, and the slug pelleter wouldn’t be very accurate, so I dug this out of the back of the barn. It’s sat there untouched for 24 years.
I swept some of the dust off and greased it...
