    Spring drilling

Lots of soul searching early last week and then decided to drill 20 hectares of maize in conditions that were a bit damp but just about warm enough, confirmed with a soil thermometer. Last couple of days we have had frosts so seed is just sat there not doing much. We have lots still to do so...

JCB 532 losing coolant gaining engine oil

Sorry I got my numbers mixed up so thought it easier to edit my post and show the price list from the main perkins parts suppliers in France so you could compare parts numbers. I am not sure what the number I was looking for back than, there are so many different numbers its hard to keep track...

Disastrous winter crops - cultivate out how?

Somehow we make money out of 2 to 2.5 t/ac winter cereal crops. If I could grow 2t/ac spring cereal crops I would grow them.

JCB 532 losing coolant gaining engine oil

When I said a few years I meant at least 12/15 years ago and I could only find genuine and the cheapest I found from half a dozen places in the UK and europe were all around £500. I know they are a lot cheaper now that aftermarket stuff is available but early on perkins took the pee. I still...

JCB 532 losing coolant gaining engine oil

par for the course I am afraid its a well known problem on both the four and six cylinder engines. Someone told me the other day that there are cheaper aftermarket ones available now but when I looked into changing mine a few years ago quotes were £500ish for something cast in what my father...

JCB 532 losing coolant gaining engine oil

That looks exactly like the engine in our 530-70 that had the corroded timing case issue. Ours was an AK engine but believe the AR to be similar. I actually took our cover off, looked for a new one, almost fainted at the price so filled the cavity in the cover with silicon and it did another...

    MTX 150 PTO

If it runs for a bit and then kicks out I find its often the pto brain thinking that the pto speed is too different to the engine rpm and it thinks the clutch is slipping. Check the belts to the alternator are good and tight and if they are fine its worth reprogramming the pto speed sensor...

where do farmers think farming will be, in 5 years time

It would be interesting to speculate on a UK lamb price if a Le Pen government stopped UK exports to France.

where do farmers think farming will be, in 5 years time

Currently polling 31% for the European elections in six weeks time. If most French MEPs are anti Europe where are we headed? Frexit?

where do farmers think farming will be, in 5 years time

I suspect its less of a problem for you than for us because Oz will carry on doing what it does well being an efficient primary producer. Whereas in the EU and the UK agriculture is far more at the mercy of the political direction in fashion at any moment in time. Five years is not long in...

    Andersons Seminars - Thoughts?

I had no idea Andersons were still using Loam Farm as their imaginary business. As a junior consultant I worked on setting up that project in the early 1990s. I think it was launched at Cereals in 1991 or 1992. At the time we thought up three farms Clay, Loam and Brash which had different...

    Jcb telehandler joystick

Got fed up with trying to fix this having checked out the lever, wiring and solenoids so called in the dealer. The chap they sent out said "lower/tilt switch power short to ground" actually means the Brain/ECU has picked up an unexpectedly low voltage in something its connected to, its probably...

Couple of interesting machines for sale

I guess it would depend on rotation but with just Wheat and OSR and in the south of England we used to be done and dusted in three weeks. That was 25 years ago, my last UK harvest was 1999. Here we can be harvesting from June till Christmas.

Couple of interesting machines for sale

With a warmer climate and a range of crops running from barley through to grain maize you can keep a combine running much longer than the 4 week window in the UK. Have a look in the south of france, spain italy etc and you will find big houred combines without heading east. My 2166 is a...

Fac Variation and Which large calibre rifle?

There is a well organised Police de Chasse that control shooting very tightly. Shooting is as popular in France as fishing is in England. Almost 1 in 10 of the population have passed the exam to have a hunting licence which is even more surprising when you hear 97% are men. My (admittedly...

Fac Variation and Which large calibre rifle?

The answer is complicated but generally yes but only because the law hasn't been updated since its introduction so certain regions allow it . Anything .22 including magnums etc or less is generally regarded as a target calibre only. Local accepted practise is that even a .222 is regarded as...

Fac Variation and Which large calibre rifle?

Always think its odd plenty of deer (including reds) and wild boar are shot here with solid slugs out of 12 bores yet the .22 is not a legal hunting rifle so can't be used for rabbits etc.
