    Angus Myostatin

The Angus myostatin is the version that produces the heavier calves at birth, unlike the limousine F94L that produces lighter calves that develop muscle after they are born.

    What’s wrong with my lamb

Closest I have seen to that was on the side of a springing heifers udder one summer, I put it down to sweat and rubbing of the leg. It stank, the skin actually was rolling off. I used herbal wash and cream on her and it cleared up, but did take a while. Looks like it is skin folds affected in...

    (Northern) Irish farm words

As others have said it varies from one county to the next and in some cases even between neighbouring villages. Narrow down the area you will be covering and the locals may help you out. Don't worry to much, you'll be grand!

    Pedigree AA Bull Registration

Probably no DNA sample received so they were unable to DNA test the bull so his registration is not complete. Contact the breeder, the bull may be eligible for a free test (depends what year he was born) but I am guessing you will have to get a tissue sample to the society yourself. If breeder...

    Chianina cattle

Yeah, should have stated a single copy is allowed and put over dairy cattle should have no problems, beef hefiers are a whole different ballgame. I just feel it is being chased for the bonus in the factory (and why not, more money is always welcome) but if a farmer has a problem due to a single...

    Chianina cattle

The myostatin gene that is permitted in the Angus is the nt821 which is common in the Belgium blue and causes heavier calves and therefore more difficult births. The main Limousin gene is F94L which causes increased muscle mass after birth so easier calvings. This F94L gene will cause your...

    Live sheep import?

unfortunately the loophole is that if it is packaged in the uk it can be sold as uk beef/lamb but it does not have to have taken a breath in the uk. It is much cheaper to bring it in dead. Public needs educated to the difference in born in/reared in/slaughtered in and packed in codes...

Retained afterbirth, pull, leave or cut off? Graphic picture warning

find they normally come away @ 8-9 days with a gentle pull, vets have told me not to worry about them for 10 days. Use gloves! and apply some pressure, if not moving forget about it til next day, normally will pass intact and a young fit cow should rid herself of any residue within a short time...

Ewe with stomach on the floor - advice sought

sounds like pre-pubic tendon rupture. prognosis for ewe not good in that case but if close to lambing, keep her comfortable and be there to assist for best chance of live lambs. Would be happy to be proved wrong though.

    Calf bent at knees

Super calf. fingers crossed he will be flying by the summer, thankfully it does them no real harm but it isnt great seeing the legs shake when they get tired.

    Calf bent at knees

I looked back at your pics and see what you mean, his feet are flat on the ground. But i still would say he looks worse after being up due to being tired. It took my lad a long time to straighten and even longer for the legs to strengthen (would have bent at the knees if tired even at a few...

    Calf bent at knees

Had one even worse than this and yes they do seem worse after they have been up for a while. I put it down to the legs getting tired as they are walking on tippytoes. My lad was so stubborn even when his legs got tired he refused to lie down but rested on his knees for a few mins then got up...

    Heifer calved with no milk

She has gone in calf, maintained a pregnancy and given birth so I would assume she has proved she is suitable for breeding. Unfortunately I dont believe a breeding guarantee would cover milk production, even in a dairy animal, but someone else on here may know more than me

Very sick cow with crusting nasal discharge, mouth dripping and very poor

It always happens to the nicest or best ones. Did the vets mention Fog fever? unfortunately I have seen this first hand in years gone by and the symptoms seem similar. Outcome with this was almost always death

Csec heifer - keep or road?

feel your pain, for me a c-section is not an automatic cull offence, but temperament issue at calving is. For me I would cut my losses now, but only you can make that call. If you are prepared to do the same next year, take a chance, but if not, send her down the road.
