Friend of mine who was an ag bank manager was called in by the local branch manager (who didn't understand agriculture) because one of the local branch manager's one-man-band ag contractor's was regularly over his overdraft limit and the branch manager didn't know whether to pull the plug or...
Yes, I agree with this! I’ve a dealer (with decades of experience and who I trust) who will see to this side of things for me. It was the bit in the middle - feeding costs, typical liveweight gain, time, etc - that I’m hoping you or others will be able to help me understand better
What are the figures like for fattening cull cows?
I’ve quite a lot of mature hay that needs using up, plus a lot of straw too. It would be good to pass it through an animal to turn it into FYM. I’d need to supplement the hay with cake / molasses etc but was wondering what the figures look like...
Regenerative farming is trying to farm hand-in-hand with nature and natural processes, rather than fighting them and trying to defeat them.
Scientists have, for decades, sold us the lie that, if we apply X we will get Y. Unfortunately, nature doesn’t work like that.
As John Muir, the...
My wife works in London, she took her team of 12 middle class, professional city types out for their Christmas team meal the other day. Number of vegetarian / vegan meals chosen was nil, they all had meat (11 had venison, one had beef). I was surprised and delighted when she told me. Whilst they...
My v old Ford 4000 had a loader which seems to be losing power - it is unable to lift as much as it used to. What are the possible causes and cures? Thanks
I remember my uncle self-feeding his cattle with metal barriers like @Forever Fendt describes. They leaned against the metal feed barrier which kept the adjustable arm pressed against the face. As they ate the face, the barrier pushed back towards it - the arm kept it the right distance away at...
That was the attitude of airline pilots years ago. Hide your mistakes.
Nowadays they are encouraged to share all near misses so others learn and training can incorporate the lessons. The result is the airline industry has become one of the safest means of transport in the world. Let's learn off...
On an old tractor with some baler twine (which I'd just taken off a bale) which I'd put in the footwell temporarily, to take back to the bin (next to where I park up). One end of the twine fell out of the cab, the rear wheel of the tractor ran over it and the other end of the twine had somehow...
I understand it's a work in progress. We've migrated 4 small businesses but the largest, most complex, will stay with the old Business Manager software for at least another year. We are told that the additional features will come in over summer 2023. Should be good.
Yes, I have, and started migrating four different businesses onto it today. Will take a while to get used to it, and for it to become good enough to deal with more complex businesses, but it’s long overdue and will be great for us.
PS Business Manager was good, but very clunky and lacks a lot...
What a strange stance to take. FW has blown the whistle on it. They should be praised. If it’s common knowledge that criminal activity has been taking place for 25+ years then why haven’t the police got involved, or the Food Standards Agency, or Trading Standards? They are culpable, not the...
Possibly, though I suspect its more about length of exposure to grazing than type of grazing animal. I suspect sheep will damage susceptible herbs more quickly than cattle will though, so sort of agree with you
I mob graze mine and love them. They persist and persist and persist. The cattle are really contented and very healthy on them. The soil has improved dramatically too. I wouldn't go back to straight grasses or grass/ clover mix.
(One lasted 5-6 years and was still going strong whilst mob grazed...
Update: I spoke with @AlexMcGowan and he has sorted out a new contract with prices that we're happy with and which compare very favourably to those we were receiving before. Thanks for the recommendation @Exfarmer
Thanks - yes, I think the FiTs are set in stone according to when the installation was done. It's the export bit - is it just a case of shopping round for the best export tariff?
@Daniel did you find it easy to switch and if so how did you go about it? Thanks
