New entrants / post entry / building the future of our industry.

While I'm not so young in body, still so in mind, I finally started my own flock last year after all my surgeries and illness. 5 years later than planned. My biggest issue was finding suitable grazing, especially as I'm coming into it in a new area where I know no one. I bought my electric...

    Dogs at lambing time

One person/couple with a german shepherd lets it off in the field next door for a run, it then goes into the pond right next to my field gate where the owner throws sticks for it to crash and splash and chase any wildlife in said pond. They've no care that its someone else's land or the damage...

    Dogs at lambing time

I've had signs out before my sheep even touched the land I have to graze. Even sent letters to all the local houses and hand delivered them. Rich tosser nearby let her dog out and chase my sheep on the hottest day of the year just 4 weeks into my venture. denied it was her despite witnesses...

Grazing non organic ewes on organic ground

Thanks all, still finding my feet in this sheep business. Slowly but surely!

Grazing non organic ewes on organic ground

Oh that sucks as it would take 120 days for me to probably clear one paddock let alone the entire place. Its well within 10 miles so, yeah... Was hoping to put this year's lambs on it post-weaning after owners take hay off. Or potentially lamb on it as its secure away from walkers and put...

Grazing non organic ewes on organic ground

Thank you very much! This now leads to another question. There are three potential fields/paddocks, each one is more than enough for my flock. Could I do 120 in one paddock, 120 in the next, 120 in 3rd etc?

Grazing non organic ewes on organic ground

Apologies to bump up an old thread. I couldn't find another post. I started my flock last year and have been using Holistic Management and regenerative methods from the start. Not organic but as organic as I can without painting myself into a corner. There is a local organic producer who has...

New Farming Investment Fund launched today

Hey Janet, New entrant farmer/shepherd here. I'm renting land and tbh never even thought or knew about subsidies or payments that the landlord may or may not get. Will this be an issue? Also, I'm only working sheep. There was no sheep farmer options, just "farmer with livestock" Now I'm not...

    Bad shearing cuts

First lambing job I did, I also helped them trimming horns. Chap showing me took too much off and sent me to barn to grab some, I honestly thought he was taking the pee. Almost like go to the ar part place for Indicator Fluid or tartan paint. Got it anyway, went back and he just placed it...

    Does it all sell...?

I'm struggling to tell what a reasonable purchase price is for certain breeds. Namely Shetlands, Hebs etc for my "nice to look at" sheep but then also want something commercial too. I'm after another 15 or so ewes/ewe lambs but don't know what is reasonable and what is ridiculous.

    Working dog vet insurance

Likewise. Chatted to Mrs about what we're doing regarding insurance, currently we're still on insurance, but expecting massive jump in price come September. Then it's rainy day fund, which she isn't keen on given his age. She was tempted to go with 0% credit card just in case and put money...

    Working dog vet insurance

They're incredibly adaptive. I was having lots of surgery at the time we got him and he helped me through it. Felt if he can manage on 3 legs then I can manage with knackered ankle, prosthetic wrist and a rareish illness. if I was a sheep I'd have culled myself

    Working dog vet insurance

I hate owners that do that, pushing for unnecessary ops that won't improve the pet's QoL. Same for the supervet stuff, I mean what he does is great, but at what cost to the animal involved.

    Working dog vet insurance

We've had a working stock collie on 3 legs since 5 months old. Insurance helped us with Op costs after some dosey cow hit us head on and he needed exploratory surgery to see if cruciate was gone after he slammed into the bulkhead of the crate in the pickup. Then hydrotherapy so get him back...

Don't know what breed I have

I was looking into fat tailed sheep breeds a while ago after a friend was telling me about his farming life in Namibia where they had Karakul. My offering is Edilbay or Karakul as others have said.

    Sheep winter housing

Sorry to bang my Iceland drum, but there the ewes + lambs were moved from the main holding pens into the wooden slatted mothering/bonding pens with just a sprinkling of sanitising powder and sawdust on top. Only downside was some of the afterbirth wouldn't go down or would hang either side of a...

"Improving Our Lot" - Planned Holistic Grazing, for starters..

Do you often travel together anywhere? Possibly throw Nicole Masters' audibook on in the truck etc? Buy him Gabe Brown's book for birthday or just leave it lying about, maybe "a friend left it and you thought he'd fancy a read?". Are there any regnerative or holistic management courses/field...

    Sheep winter housing

The farm I worked on in Iceland and others I was shown photos of, all used slats, albeit wooden ones. The newer sheep sheds are built with the plastic slats mind you. House from November to May and saw no foot issues in the 800 or so there. As previous posters have said, you save loads of money...

    Leader follower grazing

I've yet to find anyone I know doing it (mind you I'm new and no few people.) One person I asked said they won't do it because they've no worm burden. The only way I'd like to do it would be Cows, then sheep, then chickens.
