    Pregnant wife and cade lambs

The birthing fluids are what can carry the potential danger, general consensus is dry lambs are fine. Obviously even then hygiene is key as you could end up picking up stomach bugs etc.

    Calfs on milk powder

What does the bag say? Some powders are 180g made up to 1L, others are as low as 125g to the litre. 2L at recommended strength isn't a lot really, I've tried a higher ratio mix at 2x2L and currently do standard ratio at 2x3L. It's more about mill solids than volume of liquid at the end of the day.

    Magnesium tablets.....

I take Calcium/Magnesium, they somehow woek together. Also bananas for the potassium. The combination does work effectively against cramps!

    Cordless battery shearing machine

We have the Razor, handy this time of year to carry about for dagging the odd one. They can do a full shear but overheat if you do 2 or 3 in quick succession. I'd say they're all much of a muchness, if you want to clip sheep as well then go for a 12v hangup machine and get a pair of jakotis for...

    I know the answer but...

I tried last year with one, it wanted to live, but it had lost enough of it's tongue that it couldn't suck. I tubed it for a few days and tried to find a teat that would let it drink, but had to do the right thing in the end as it would have starved to death. Sometimes better to give them a...

    Best artificial lamb colostrum?

Strip a bit off any suitable sheep I have to hand, or if I don't have a any I use cow colostrum. Never had an issue and never used powdered stuff

Is my vet taking the pee!

My house dog had hers go about 7 years ago. We did the cheap suture option but that ruptured too. Ended up at an orthopedic clinic, cost around £2000, then physio for a few months after. The other one went just as she got back to full fitness so we went though all the process again.

    Eat less meat

No, eat better quality meat. Eat locally sourced meat. Sure, eat less cheap, low welfare, of dubious origin meat. But good quality meat should be satisfying, filling and healthy. You don't need half a packet of chicken nuggets, a 4oz steak and plenty of veg and potatoes is a much healthier meal.

    Small scale calf rearing/veal

Check the regulations around labelling as veal. I'm pretty sure they have to be slaughtered under 6 months and/or be in a defra regulated unit. You want a guaranteed market too, as feeding for veal will cost a lot more than just rearing to finish, and if they don't sell as veal you may well not...

    'Shine' lamb milk powder

Never been able to get Downland round here, have bought Ewereka Shine for the past 2 years, does a good enough job. Last year I was paying £45 for a 20kg sack. They do it in handy resealable 5kg buckets too, depends on numbers though as to whether 5kg is any use :ROFLMAO:

    In-lamb ewe sales

    Calves at weaning

We do small numbers but we keep concentration the same and reduce volume of milk, so from full ration to totally weaned over 14 days. They will have a check, as they adjust, but ad lib provin and straw is the best diet, the scratch of the straw is supposed to get the rumen going and provin is...

2 dead ewe lambs in a week, why?

Switched to Bravoxin/Covexin 2 years ago, then this summer got hit with pasteurella. On vet advice we vaccinated every sheep (ewes, lambs and tups) with 2 doses of hep p to get them back in the system. Lost a couple more of suspected pasteurella since. We have bought 1 dose of vaccine for all...

    Calf multi feeder

If they are used to being bucket fed it can take a couple of feeds to get the hang of the teat. Brand new teats are quite hard and the milk flow is quite slow so they can get frustrated. Keep at it and they'll get the hang of it.

    Sheep checking.

Are they a bit fit if they keep getting cast? The only problems I've had this year have been with some Texels I bought in lamb, built like tables, wide flat backs!

    Sheep checking.

I checked ours early afternoon in the summer, all good. About 2 hours later I had a call off a neighbour who had seen a cast ewe, he can't access our land due to being in his 70's and 2 fences and a dyke separating the two farms, or he'd be righting our sheep himself! Regardless of how often you...

    Sheep Tags

Used to use Roxan ( at the time they did coloured large management tags which we wanted) but they fell out for fun. I think we were losing 5-10% per year. They'd just come undone and fall out! Switched to Shearwell this year, I think we've lost 1 tag out of 150 double tagged, and that has ripped...

    Clostridial issues with lambs

Thanks Harry, we are actually losing the land we are currently on some time in the next 12 months due to our landlord selling it for rewilding (don't get me.started!) As we're on it for a limited and unknown period of time, we haven't wanted to spend more than absolutely necessary on fencing...

    Clostridial issues with lambs

See, our vets are treating the individual problems, telling us we have worm resistance, questioning our vaccination technique, not looking further down the line. What has been said here mirrors exactly what a friend told us yesterday, make sure the minerals are right and everything else should...
