    Design me the perfect cultivator

I've never got this right. My criteria are: Must be 4m min and pulled by 265hp. Minimal moving parts & bearings Must have reasonably priced tungsten wearing metal. Needs to be able to work hilly heavy land to say 8 inches max, with both lift and mix. Must also be able to work shallow and quick...

Winter cover crops on heavy land... what a disaster

I farm heavy silty clay with flints. No ditches, no land drains. Good strong wheat land, if unforgiving. I've been trying to grow cover crops on and off for the last 9 yrs. With one exception, they have all been disastrous. Summer cover crops in place of a spring crop, on the other hand, can...

    Dozers on farm?

Anyone got one? I've got about 10kms of tracks in a pretty poor state that need major work. I've also got a yard to replace. Despite the obvious desire to placate the boyhood dream of owning one.. what are the pros and cons of buying a say a 1990s D5 or similar for the job? Tilty blade in...

    Broadcasting spring corn.....

This is written in the hope that it will induce drought like conditions... But anyway, anyone regularly broadcast and harrow spring corn in? I have barley and oats to go in, and the spring tine is going to be the only machine that will go, if it carries on anything like this.. I know, I...

    Pigeons and companion crops

An interesting observation from this year's experiments: Planted spring linseed seed with my osr. The linseed is dying off, but the taller straight stems, I'm fairly certain, are keeping the pigeons off the rape. Can't remember the seed rate off the top of my head, but it was higher than the...

    Fert spinners for dummies

I know nothing about them having been all liquid fert forever. However, I'm now looking at a bit pile of urea bags. I do have a spreader, but it's very old, and partially doesn't work (won't register a speed reading so can't use the box). Anyway, a new one is probably out of the question, but...

    Rotary cleaners

I'm looking at upgrading our cleaning capacity in house. Can anyone recommend rotary cleaners? Ease of use, ease and cost of changing screens hanging between crops, and throughput are all considerations. Many thanks

    Anyone know about gravity separators?

Owing to a rash moment I'm now the proud owner of what I think is a vacuum type gravity separator, made by Buhler. I have a manual for it and a vague idea how it works, but don't know how much suck to put on the top of it, or even what type of suck that needs to be, fan type etc etc. Any...

1990s case Cx15 mini digger parts.

I need some bits for this machine, specifically O rings between the slices on the spool block, as well as a cable assembly. Have the part numbers but they are all now obsolete according to Warwick Ward dealers. Does anyone have any ideas as to where to source? Many thanks

Insulated roof sheets on concrete purlins?

Has anyone done this? My understanding is that you can't fix to the concrete purlins- I.e. j bolts not possible (possibly due to manufacturers guarantee issues?), so you have to either replace with z purlins, or put timbers on top of the concrete. Would be most grateful for any experiences...

Natural capital and ecosystem assessment programme- anyone else been contacted?

As above, just had a letter through. Natural England wanting to survey a 1km square. Data to be publicly available. Looking to re-survey every 5 yrs Apparently there are 1700 of such squares in England. A useful baseline exercise for free, or the slippery slope of data appropriation etc...

    Glyphosate in with pre-ems?

It's chuffing windy I want to go drilling. I have some big weeds (groundsel, thistles) but not many grassweeds in the seedbeds yet. From memory you're only allowed 1.5lts of 360 post drilling. Is gly with pre-ems a waste of time? Thanks!

    Summer cover crop destruction.

Any advice would be welcome on this. I have 80ha of heavy, flinty, hilly land going into winter wheat that currently looks like this: It's chest/ head high, completely alive with insects, and is mainly spring linseed, buckwheat, sunflowers, phacelia, and a bit of clover and vetch. I don't...
