Working on weekly averages, that would mean on track for 230,000+ less going to be traded this year.....
Sorry, edited, didn't read it properly that it was only for Jan/Feb.
Presume this is just Ireland @Hilly ?
My initial reaction was a negative one, but after giving it some thought, I tend to agree.
Was it Steve Jobs or someone that said something along the lines of "it's better for consumers to own another brand of smartphone, than no smartphone at all"
It's better that they eat foreign lamb, than...
I've got a cow that is about 17 here, retained one of her sons to use for breeding as he stood out as having exceptional growth and seems to be pretty docile so far.
His first calves should be dropping this year, so be interesting to see what calving ease is like. Out of about 200 ish calves...
That was kind of my point, that if you are culling for calving problems etc. and weeding out the rubbish, surely what you should be left with is cows that carry on producing into old age without problems. You can't find those cows without keeping them until they are older.
From a genetic gains...
Why? Isn't longevity something you want to breed for? Surely the more productive years you get out of a cow, particularly under a harsh culling regime, the better your stock will be over the long term and the better you return you get per cow??
It happens, as you well know after this mornings bad luck.
Bit naff that one of the cows was a cracking red poll, who I gave to my sister as a calf, and has had 3 brilliant heifer calves, 2 of which calved this year and had heifer calves.
This probably isn't the thread to discuss it, but I used to be of a similar opinion. These days I tend to disagree. There is opportunity all around you if you are in the mindset to create or find it, then persue it doggedly enough. It's too easy these days to throw your hands up and say "ah...
This is what I want to work towards.
The thing restricting me at the moment is, the area I graze is below river level, which especially in a year like this has it's obvious challenges! The majority is marshland which is quite literally years worth of dead plant matter, basically floating. When...
Hesitant to post this, but here goes.......
1) Why is everyone else pushing for it? Because they see how much of a toll it's taking on you? Or how much of a toll it's taking on them??
2) You answered your own question of what you want in the point above and in this point. You want your own...
@Kiwi Pete any out of the box suggestions for when we are grazing ground that can only be grazed within certain months because of schemes we have in the UK (not me that signed up to them!) and ground that floods/is too wet to carry cattle in the winter?
We mostly house at the moment, but the...
Had one round here like that. I went and had words after some of our staff started getting wound up that he was taking pictures of their cars etc.
Somewhere on YT there is a highly embarrassing video of me being frogmarched back into the building after things nearly went nuclear.
Had no idea...
