    infiltration doesn't work

Obviously it does work. What I mean is that trying to achieve infiltration doesn't work. Or rather, it doesn't here. I've read all[1] the books, seen talks about how Gabe Brown et al just get all the rainwater to infiltrate away in 5 minutes, and how valuable every drop of that water is, and...

    1975 John Deere, coolant additive

I have a 1975 John Deere 2030, and I was about to change the coolant. Well, I was going to top it up and I thought I might as well be diligent and change it all. The manual goes so far as to say "Ethylene Glycol", and stops, I guess that was as far as the technology went back then. On...

    Pigs after cattle

Only on a smallholding scale, but I'm looking at the deep cattle bed as it grows through the winter. Obviously it's pretty densely compacted straw and shite. Last year after they went out in Spring I piled it all up to aerate and get it composting before it was spread months later. With my...

    Miscanthus straw, Carmarthenshire

Anyone know anywhere I can get miscanthus straw for cattle bedding in Carmarthenshire? We're only a smallholding, so don't need a entire artic lorryload at once, but could store a few tonnes around the place if necessary. Barley straw from my regular supplier is getting kind of pricey already.

    One sick field?

Can a field be sick? We have a small field by the side of the house that always seems to make sheep lame. It's only ~2/3rds of an acre. The chickens live in here too, within a 25m electric net, and they get moved onto a fresh spot a couple of times a year. It held the cesspit for ~70 years...

    No luck with tups

We have a small flock of Hill Radnors, and our previous ram was never quite right in his feet. Shelley hoof, limping, etc. We got rid, and bought a posh new yearling at the recent show. He was ok in a field with his wether-consort for a couple of weeks, and now he's in with the ewes but the...

3 week old calf ate a rag

Out in the field I saw a calf chewing on a rag, perhaps a baby wipe (found a couple in the field, I think brought in with muck). I couldn't catch her to get it out and she seemed determined to hold on to it while I chased her around. Much chance of it passing through, or being spat back out...
