I was talking to my kids and their friends about this last week my eldest sons do run round the corner park but it’s a bit boring for them on all nice flat tarmac. When I was at school which was not that long ago mid 90s we went proper cross country runs across fields and on rough tracks in the...
Very different equation though with arable which we are talking about in here all you can loose is a bit of money. With the herbal ley v ryegrass you can be left with a half full silage clamp and have to go out and buy feed or sell livestock which makes the payment look a bit small fry
The only thing I can think of is there is a little area that puddles just inside the gate that runs off the road. My brother put a few moles through it in the summer with the hope of letting it away but that puddle is usually clear water from the road
Been ditching today finding outfalls as the outfall is a bit low in the ditch really but struggled with fall a bit hence depth. Anyway I’ve been thinking the field is a bit wet in one quarter roughly so wanted to make sure the outfalls are running but when I found it I found it running very...
They are too handy and they go too fast and carry too much for their own good. You go the same speed as a bike on your David brown and see how long it lasts or rather how long you last. but I’d recommend a good seatbelt a crash helmet
We are not at that stage maybe 3or 4 lambs in each lot over the season but worse if it’s exceptionally wet. It comes very quickly though had one this morning that was lame as a cat but didn’t notice anything at all yesterday morning
Ultrapen and metcam seems to work well with us. I don’t think it’s navels its tails and sacks when they are falling off. Does anyone one here do hot ironing of tails or leave them entire and un docked problem is most that do that will probably lamb in April when it’s drier
These prices of 2500 to 3000 is what they ought to be worth. But is anyone paying it? Four cows and calves for 10 grand it would make your eyes water starting up a herd
Old money isn’t the same as new. Last April I did a few days on a gravel cart behind a Muir hill used it all day then it suddenly stopped on me I thought I’d maybe run out of diesel opened the lid and it was still nearly full!! A modern tractor would have used twice as much I recon.
edit the...
What sort of ground have you got? If it’s good ground you could have them fat in June/July on grass and milk but if it’s a bit paddocky unloved sort of ground turn them out and creep them. You don’t really want sheep in a shed in spring or summer
We bolused some heifers last year and we got more in calf than the year before. My brother worked out it’s no different in price to mineral buckets so now we have a crush with hydraulic head scoop we will do all the cows so we know they’ve had it and no buckets getting stuck in the hedges and...
20 years ago arable farmers would of been drilled up by third week of sept been shooting and skiing all winter without a care in the world then come back mid March to forward crops that don’t need any N in a panic. So the wet wouldn’t of bothered them in the slightest apart from wiping the mud...
