What I taking from it:
Avoid thatch
Avoid bare soil
Go for good animal performance
Managing for biodiversity yields Natural supplemention for animals
Give animals the space to spread out to graze
I have had my long rest fields melt on me in some places more than others. A lot of grass species in Ireland evolved with and handle continued grazing I think.
I am thinking of burying some round bales of silage as a reserve of last resort. Hopefully will never be needed but these dry summers are making me think. How would you do this? Stack on flat end and just cover?
Irish farmers have heavily invested in slurry storage in last 15 years. We were pushed by the state agencies and a lot of grants. However we now have spent so much on concrete we have a path dependency and no focus on outwintering systems. If nature wanted dung and urine to mix it would not...
Yes I could but I am curious now about this kind of managed continous grazing, I visited a dairy farmer doing if and he had amazing diversity & stock. I now need to know will my pasture last just as long on daily moves through 7 divisions
I was hoping to get to Christmas there and then take them to hill block. Diversity hasn't really taken off on this farm since moving to long rest periods and I live too far away to move more frequently.
Poaching levels will be interesting as I know how this farm performs rotationally during...
Speaking of outwintering, I have 11 May born calves and 3 Jersey cows with 20 acres ahead of them -aftergrass 90 days since being cut. I am currently moving once every 2 days but am going to switch to a continuous graze system as an experiment. I am thinking splitting into 9 paddocks and moving...
This is a confusing one. Organic dairy farmer over here switched from holistic planned grazing to a short grass grazing system

Congrats, I am debt free this year too, its a real high. I have been beset with lows too that are really staying with me. Basically I have had way too many die in last 6 months 4 out of 20 cows. Different reasons / mistakes. Hard on the ego
Johan Zeitsman agrees on the smaller cow, in Veld conditions in Africa, 300kg is optimum for him, also he priotitises high meat to bone ratio, I know our native Droimeanns kill out a high %
This org is interesting, i read a bit about them this evening, seemed like something I could go for but I am a bit bothered by what their employees say about them on indeed, they sound very demanding & I am allergic to companies like that
