Going by the recent announcement from fonterra it looks like it will be a good year to milk cows in kiwi land. What effect will this have on world prices do you think?
Either way it will be a good year to be share milking or contract milking over there.
@FonterraFarmer might even be able to...
Not sure how popular these are in the Uk. We are looking to update our trailer feeders for feeding milk to calves. We currently have stallion feeders that have seen better days. The other option seems to be milk bar.
Anyone have much experience with milk bar? I’ve never even seen one.
The...
Anyone ever installed or seen some type of headlock on a rotary? I don’t have much Available for handling facilities and It’s too slow anyway one at a time.
We like to give a shot of glycol to fresh cows maybe a bolus sometimes And do all tagging on the rotary. At times it can turn into a bit...
Going to teat seal all cows this year and was wondering what difference there was between brands.
I have some orbeseal ordered but found another brand that is cheaper.
Orbeseal £7.50 per cow
U seal is £6.33 per cow
A significant savings over a few cows. I haven’t teat sealed since I was a kid...
I was just thinking of the number of things I’ve learned to do on YouTube over the years and how it’s saved me lots of time and money. And for the most part has been done out of desperation and my hatred of paying someone something that took me 20 minutes to learn.
Has anyone else learned...
Our feeding tractor is a 2013 JD 7200R. It has recently had a mechanical failure. The splines on the transmission input shaft have worn badly, wearing off the splines on the yoke. This also happened about a year ago and we replaced the yoke and continued on. Talking to our independent...
Currently sitting at the airport awaiting a plane home. I traveled to the UK for a couple weeks and Ireland for a few days. I would like to thank everyone that I met along the way. I really enjoyed my time there and everyone was a very gracious host. Certainly appreciated everyone taking the...
How does everyone with a four wheeler carry their reels and posts?
I have tried a couple ways in the past but it usually breaks due to rough lanes/vibrations/poor driving.
Currently this is what we do. Zip tied some tarp straps to the rack to hold the reels on.
I am planning on taking some time off and going for a look see around your country this coming February. Looking for some input from y’all.
I’d like to meet some farmers, dairy primarily (have a good number of you on Snapchat) and see a friend over there. Plan is to fly to London and then go to...
Tried to order a box of these from our Gallagher dealer and was told they were discontinued.
Is this just here or over there as well? Hard to understand why they would quit making the only post of theirs that was worth a sh!t.

One of the more interesting articles about dairy from a complete “outsider” point of view
https://www.spalding-labs.com/products/fly_control_products/cow_vac/default.aspx
Always wary of using insecticides on cows (or anything) could this be effectively used to reduce or eliminate fly spraying on dairy farms?
So we have a PI issue here. It is tank specific. We have two identical tanks and only one of them ever reads above 0. It is sporadic and could go for weeks or a month at zero then suddenly jump to 10 or 200 or 700.
The tank shows no sign of build up. And we even wash it twice between loads...
I thought it would be interesting to see what everyone drives. I will start with mine.
I like to drive a small, cheap, relatively fuel efficient car that is at least ten years old with a low cost of ownership. This makes it cheap to tag and insure. This is my current one, an 08 Scion...
So here recently out of the blue I got a call asking if I would be interested in managing a 500 cow, seasonal, organic dairy farm on the west coast. I wasn't looking for a job and do not even have a resume/CV current. They said that I came highly recommended by a consultant friend of mine.
I...
So as a person who has been around bovines the majority of my life, I can safely say I have met one person that I can tolerate working cattle with. Am I doing something wrong or is everyone else?
When I interact with any group of cattle, beef or dairy, my goals are: Get the cattle to want to...
So what's everyone doing for colostrum feeding? What is your protocol? Like amount, temp, test, timing, tools, tube or bottle used etc
Also, does anyone have experience block calving a decent size herd with a limited (largely untrained and inexperienced) labor force? I am very unhappy with how...
