    Depreciation rates.

Who sets depreciation rates on farm machinery. Can you and your accountant agree to use a smaller percentage? Reason for asking. 5-10 year old machines are constantly fetching far more than there book value. You then get taxed on this uplift as an income. Am I correct? Are there any benefits to...

    Temporary grain walling

Wanting to put up a run of 60ft self supporting concrete grain walling. 10ft high, to be filled both sides. Which type would you recommend? Like the look of the alpha blocks but the hollow section concerns me with regard to vermin getting in. As when they are installed they will probably stay...

    Legal advice regarding uncles estate

No not a 1/3 of it. Brought in on a profit sharing basis on the recommendation of the accountant who saw that I was doing all the work without an equity in the business. On the basis that I could build some collateral in the business going forward. Too little too late I know!,

    Legal advice regarding uncles estate

No and I didn’t know that this original document even existed until after my uncle passed!

    Legal advice regarding uncles estate

Uncle passed away 18 months ago. He was 50% partner in the farm with my father. He hadn’t got round to updating his will since having got married 3 months prior to his sudden death (massive heart attack at age 75). So he is classed as having died “intestate” with no valid will to present for...

    Single phase motor

Hi, Does anyone have a large capacity (approx 3.4kw) single phase motor including starter mechanism available? Our farm only has a single phase supply and the motor on a 5” tripod grain auger that we occasionally use has had it. I’ve taken it to a motor rewinds company and they have said that...

    Winter beans

Didn’t get a chance to get winter beans in. Fields became too wet very quickly by mid October. So I have winter bean seed waiting in the bag. Land only just recovering from recent wet weather. So do I go with winters at the first opportunity or save them for next year and sow some springs that I...

Non farming beneficiaries of BPS funds??

My uncle passed away last January shortly after the BPS cheque landed in our current account. He has left his 50% share of the farm plus 50% share in the business to his daughter whom he had after an affair with a married women. It is only in recent years that he had even acknowledged her...

    Vaderstad/Moore unidrill project

I am considering adapting the drill coulters from a Rapide to fit onto my old unidrill. Slot closure with the Moore is often an issue on our heavy ground and I was thinking the slimmer coulter from the Rapide may make a better job. At this stage I was hoping to find some old worn coulters...

    Moore unidrill coulters & modification

The hydraulic motor is in a similar position to the original pto shaft. Then runs through two V belt pulleys to multiply the speed. This then connects onto the original spring loaded fan. Works a treat! Hope this helps.

    Moore unidrill coulters & modification

Hi Ludan, I was speaking to JJMetcalfe regarding a different coulter design for the Moore a few weeks ago. I suggested something similar to your idea and he thought blockages might be an issue. Especially in heavy trash or cover crops. His suggestion was to creat something much slimmer to the...

    Compaction can sort itself !

Just got some triticale seed to try for the 1st time. Like the idea of its vigorous grown habits both above and below ground. Hopefully good for our very heavy ground and should out-compete any black grass in 2nd cereal slot. Drilling it on Wednesday 10th October. What seed rate would you...

    Adjuvant Academy

Is the AA still on the cards or am I too late. I would be interested in attending any future meetings

    Hard water adjuvants

Appreciate your thoughts. Yes we always add adjuvant to water first and then chemical to the ‘conditioned’ water. Adjuvant academy? Not heard of that one. I’ll look into it. Cheers

    Hard water adjuvants

We farm in an extremely hard water area and I am always questioning how much this is affecting the efficiency of agrochemicals. Not just glyphosate but all herbicides. I routinely use sprite aqua with glyphosate at 100lt/ha but when we often go up to 150 or 200lt with other products the amount...

    The 15kg/ha OSR crop

I would have to agree. Looks more like a well established 5kg/ha! Have you lost many plants to flea beetle/slugs?

    Liquid avadex

Did anyone use liquid avadex last year? Was it as effective as granules? My agronomist wants me to try some. I know it has less active ingredient but he thinks the greater accuracy of a crop sprayer will counteract this! Sounds like sales talk to me. What’s your thoughts. Cheers
