Just catching up on a couple of pages of the thread, interesting comments about youngsters starting out.
I’ll somewhat break my anonymity…. I’m starting out, 23 years old in the uk. This is year 1 for me essentially
As you guys mentioned, hard to start out to some extent. I’ve taken on debt...
Anyone in uk know if this is record breaking rainfall? For February or winter overall?
might make me feel better to know I can brag about surviving the wettest winter
Thinking of spinning some red clover on permanent pasture (mostly perennial ryegrass).
Fine, I’ll admit… would be for the SFI scheme ‘maintain legumes on improved grass’ :)
Any suggestions? This spring / autumn?
Also, ways of making it work whilst adaptive grazing? Cheers. Hope everyone is well.
Yep certainly would be fine with gravity fed... just googled and supposedly they'll take 6 bar.. so would work fine for mains pressure. The lay-flat hose is meant to take 4.5 bar so also fine. In theory, would work! "theory" ;)
Nice system (y)
yep (y)
I'm thinking that any well made plastic water trough will work... just need adequate valve protection from licking etc and also as @AndrewG mentioned, a way of preventing the water pipe from twisting and moving.
Disconnecting the pipe before moving the tank is my best answer to the...
Any recommendations for water troughs / designs that suit being dragged around most days for mob grazing?
Top filling as I have mains water so need the ‘air gap’ dictated by regulations.
any photos and advice and experiences appreciated!
Curious as to how people manage their suckler herds…
Does anyone leave their stock bull in with cows, but remove heifer calfs to stop them being jumped on? Or instead separate the bull?
Does anyone leave their bull in all year round and just cull the cows that calve late?
Feel free to explain...
Same here. Dried up then chucked it down, now floods again!
Is the ploughing just for the manure absorption reason or is it a part of your plan for growing something next year?
The more bale grazing trials and info in the UK, the better… naturally there’s a lot of info on bale grazing in north US and places where the ground freezes. For those people, it seems the main goal is adding fertility in select places using hay bales. No worry of pugging / poaching as ground is...
I must admit, I think I am in a positive echo chamber. I don’t watch, listen, or read the news. I consume media that confirms my bias - that the future of livestock farming is bright and prosperous!
This may be a limiting place for me to be, however it keeps me happy and certainly optimistic...
What’s everyone’s goals when it comes to the end of the growing season?
I’m returning my cattle to grass that has not recovered and It feels wrong…. But with a lower, move even graze, the grass might come back stronger and more evenly next year?? Don’t know what to believe
1. As long as grass allows (which probably in turn means ‘as long as I allow’ if I manage well)
2. 20 - 60 head. Cattle. Again, could vary hugely on conditions or time of year.
3. 80 acres ish
4. Distance from water is as pictured. I would like to pipe from the river if possible. Save mains...
You have voiced my thoughts exactly!
I can hook up a temporary fence on either side of the footpath line - then I utilise all the grass that’s there and, as you described, divert public to left or right of the fence as needed. I can run a water line at base of these fences also, to somewhat...
