I think it would be worthwhile me asking everyone to do a sketch of what everyone thinks is the ideal layout if it was for a greenfield site.
With the requirements being for 150 cows and a milking parlour.
Looking forward to your drawings!
Dear All,
Everyone on TFF has said have all your buildings in parallel, now my last two questions are central feeding passage or perimeter feeding? and what size parlour for one man milking 150 cows?
Finally I would like to say a big thankyou to you all.
Hello All,
What are everyone's thoughts/experiences on a drive through central feed passage or feeding on the outside of the shed either with a 2 meter overhang or a fully covered passage for feeding dairy cows, any differences in intakes, wastage etc?
Hello all,
Would everyone agree that a dairy cow building and milking parlour whether in the same building or its own separate building should be in parallel?
Does anyone have or has anyone worked on a dairy unit where the milking parlour and collecting yard are at the end of the dairy cow...
Dear All,
My current system: 150 cows, 20/20 herringbone parlour, straw yards, housed all year round.
I want to get building in 2018 but I am still messing about, even after speaking to experts in the UK and in the USA and Holland I still have 3 questions.
Question 1, where to put the milking...
Which is is best?
If you were to build a new dairy cow building would you have a central drive through feed passage or feed on the outside of the building?
What does everyone think?
Ok, so I'm going to test the water here.
I have hopefully narrowed down my search for the best dairy unit layout to 2 designs
Number 1 is to have everything in parallel so the milking parlour and collecting yard with handling area next to it then either a straw yard or cubicles then a drive...
Well I always thought about having the parlour in parallel to the cow housing and then realised a lot of dairy units had pretty much the same basic layout.
Then after talking to various experts and farmers they talked about not having multi span buildings as the ventilation is poor, feeding on...
Hi everyone
Does anyone have one or has worked on any of the following 5 options and if so which is best?
The main options I have had people say are:
1, Next to the cow housing in parallel with it under the same roof.
2, At the end of the cow housing and to one side at a 90 degree angle...
Hi everyone,
I would like to know which you think is the better design for a 150 cow dairy, the
Newton Rigg dairy or Greenmount College dairy as I think these are the only two so called state of the art dairy units for 150 cows built recently.
Many Thanks
I have attached 7 rough sketches of different dairy layouts and would be interested to know your thoughts please. From talking to other dairy industry experts the two favoured designs seem to be number 2 and number 6.
Attached are 7 rough sketches of dairy layouts (unless anyone has any others).
Dairy experts I have already asked seem to suggest either number 2 or number 6, so I would just like to know people's thoughts, opinions, experiences of any of the layouts etc.
Thanks everyone.
Steve.

Hello everyone,
I'm struggling to find a definitive answer on what size of parlour could one man milk 150 cows in one hour in.
I'm aware of two ag colleges that have 150 cow herds and milk in either a 30/30 or a 32/32 milking parlour but I think they quote milking times of 1 hour 30 minutes.

Dear All
Please could anyone tell me what is the best, most simple layout and best sized parlour for a 150 cow dairy herd housed on straw yards and milked in a herringbone parlour please?
Regards
Dairyman Steve
