Currently using halacour or some variation of it. It’s a pig of a disease and I hate it. Calf shed gets cleaned as well as possible but no concrete. Is there any other solution or just keep on at it with halacour?
Calling all UK Dairy Farmers and Calf Rearers
As part of my BSc (Hons) BioVeterinary Science degree at Harper Adams University, I am carrying out research to investigate UK dairy farmers’ approach to treating neonatal calf scour.
If you are a UK dairy farmer or calf rearer, I would be very...

Occasionally, abomasal bloat will be an issue on farms – with clostridium bacteria or lactic acid usually to blame for producing the gas.
The issue is generally caused by poor hygiene, dirty bedding and inaccurate feeding.
With the calving season now...
From some conversations I’ve had recently, I’m getting the feeling there’s some panick in businesses that rely on farming customers that large scale SFI options could become very popular.
For instance, suggesting that it wouldn’t be moral, or that you wouldn’t be a real “farmer” if you take...

These posts follow last month's Agricultural Transition Plan...
Just seen on twitter that HMRC are to re classify crew cabs as cars for employees. As a Ltd Co. reckon it's back to pickups and wee vans. However the cost of them will maybe have stifled demand as it is. Best get the wax oil out and look after my current Hilux...
An Older experienced ewe very heavy with lamb went down but is still eating and drinking. The lambs do not seem to be in the uterus. Reaching inside the uterus I could feel a lamb's hoofs but it seems to be outside the uterus on the other side. The uterus seems entirely empty but seems to have...

How's everyone getting on keeping sheep and cattle outside. Pretty biblical round here. Thinking will have to house the multiples for a month to give us half a chance of getting through to spring.

Three key things are needed to aid rumen development in calves during the rearing period: water, concentrates and a source of fibre.
Calves should have access to all three from an early age so that development of the rumen can begin.
This changes the...
We are forever being told to price things and shop around to try and run our business more cost effectively but these salesmen don't seem to like it when people try something different and they might lose a sale.
They will have to get back to their bosses and sharpen their pencil, but then I...
I bought 2 pedigree cows with calves at foot, pd incalf. When I got them home one was riding a week later so I did wonder but thought we will see.
Anyway 9months later that cow is now bagging up to calve to my bull the other cow hasn't calved yet either, both were pd+ by my vet but must be to my...
Does anyone know whether having copious amounts of lead shot lying around is harmful to worms? I've eaten plenty of shot embedded in game and vermin in my time, but my guts are rather less abrasive than a worm's. Just pondering this as I wandered over our pastures this pm, in places the...
THIS IS NOT A JOB ADVERT, ADVICE NEEDED!
My brother is set to retire this year so I'm starting to look at taking someone on full-time (50hrs a week). Ideally whom is experienced and competent, for a general mixture of dairy farm work; Alone milking, tractor driving, calf rearing etc. No...
We have been checking through tags on store cattle and found that we have a passport for a beast that isnt on farm and we have a beast on the farm that we dont have a passport for, both the beast and the passport are born just a few calves apart and from the same farm, i can only presume that...

The importance of milk recording is not lost on many dairy farms, but there are still a large number of farms where it is not regularly completed.
Although farms that are not completing a milk recording will have a reason for not doing so, the amount...
