    Fert applications

With a supreme bout of optimism, I walked a couple of my grass fields today as I thought, foolishly as it turned out, that maybe I could travel with the baby compact tractor and the even smaller single rotor disc spreader. 100kg at a time. It really would be great to spin a bit of fert on to get...

    Polytunnel Isolation Unit

Confused about the time, upset about the weather, lack of chocolate in the house so all out of sorts here but... Would it be possible to run a TB isolation unit through a polytunnel which is located on a different part of the farm? Stupid times call for stupid measures and all that!

Angus cross Holstein friesian bull beef.

Thinking of fattening some bulls from dairy cows What’s achievable with Angus bull calves from good sized Holstein cows? If done intensively how fast can they be away? And at what cost ? Would be able to grow all the bedding needed and the dung from this would be beneficial to the wider business.

    Teat seals/plugs extremely tough

Lost the first calf here the other day, was quite sure he’d had a belly full the day he was born, cows teats were clean looking, but she has a big udder so hard to tell if it had gone down much. Calf took some gut infection, swole up and died on the 3rd day. Took her in (they’re on the hill)...

    Pneumonia vaccine

I've been thinking for a while I really should do some sort of pneumonia vaccine. I don't tend to have problems with my calves when they're in hutches (maybe 5% tops would display pneumonia symptoms) however once grouped at 8+ weeks I do get coughing and issues Admittedly my youngstock housing...

    Bottle fed lambs.

Previously, the only lambs that were bottle fed were ewe lambs that we were retaining for breeding so I wasn't that worried about the cost of a bit of milk powder and probably kept them on it longer than necessary. This year however I'm keeping any excess lambs (triplets, etc), inc tip lambs...

    Feeding ewes post-lambing?

Having to keep a few too many ewes and lambs about at present, but plenty of fodder still and enough shelter, at present. On Haylage or good Hay with ad-lib molasses and ewe nuts. Not ideal, as Dr Green is aim ASAP, but how many grams for a 60kg ewe and 2-3 lambs? 2-300g/lamb/day?

    Sourcing Calves

So we rear alot of calves and sell at 4/5 months. Historically been sourced from market. With the obvious trial and tribulations with market calves, I think we do a v good job. However I feel I've come to the end of the line on that route. What we achieve is probably the best that can be done...
