The UK government has announced changes to the payment rates for upland farmers in environmental land management schemes (ELMs).
These changes include making payment rates equal to lowland farms where farmers are carrying out the same actions –...
Just read the letter from PM and Ms Coffey. Why do political statements say so little about the here and now. Elms/ SFI is a disaster for the majority of farmers. Fragmented, overly complicated and paying a pittance. Govt is going to have to move on this if it wants to engage farmers.
Regenerative agriculture, vertical farming systems and small-scale, peri-urban vegetable production all offer solutions to feed the human population while sustaining or improving environmental outcomes.
Speaking in the ‘Future agricultural technologies’ online discussion, organised by the...

Copied from the BFU thread which is running about writing a letter to Rishi Sunak...
I was thinking about imports undermining our standards and prices. It doesn't even need imports to meet our standards. What I mean is, they don't need to be imports.
Take Ukrainian grain. Doesn't necessarily...
Hi, I'm Eleanor, a PhD student studying agroforestry systems.
After the PM's food summit, I saw some comments that we need to reduce futures contracts lengths so it is easier to alter pricing depending on cost changes. This differs from what I often hear about farmers needing longer, more...
I know that this is a bit political but what do we think?
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/prime-ministers-open-letter-to-british-farmers-15-may-2022/prime-ministers-open-letter-to-british-farmers
There's a few options within ELMS which look to improve soils, with long term benefits. Also some productivity investment incentives.
Most of ELMS seem to revolve around land based options which reduce food production or completely remove the land from production via various forms of fallow...

Another well written piece by the Guardian and I note it's been pointed out we have the lowest food prices in Europe, not a word arguing against increases.
Not that there's a...
I redrilled two year AB9 mix last May and am about to redrill it with a one year again because I don't think there's enough kale etc survived to pass the inspection. It came up perfectly last year with favourable rains but now mostly weeds. It's such a hassle to fiddle around with these plots...
I guess few will disagree with this?
Is British farming facing an existential crisis?
By Kevin White7 May 2023 The Grocer
The UK’s self-sufficiency is ‘slipping’, with many growers reporting receiving minuscule returns. Does Rishi Sunak’s emergency summit signal the start of meaningful action...
Its time for farmers to now accept their future and prepare, Just watched another video on youtube about the impact the goverments sub removal is having on small farms, given the fact bps goes straight to the net profit and requires no turnover to get im just curious as to how people will...
The prime minister is set to hold crisis talks, dubbed the "Sunak Summit", with supermarket bosses and farmers in Westminster on May 16 following calls for the government to address the inflationary impacts of food production, according to the Grocer.
Will anyone be attending? If so, what are...
George Monbiot loves to reference his rambling articles in the Guardian with 'facts' he's found on Google. And the week, as usual, he's pointing the finger of blame for all the worlds ills on farmers, and quoting TFF with regard to the river Lugg incident...
Purely hypothetical question at this stage but the way things are heading goodness knows when it may become a reality.
So leaving the practicalities of enforcement to the side, could you be "bought out" of farming if the stipulation was that you would never farm again in any way shape or form...
Just noticed that it’s gone “Private” and that I do not have “sufficient privileges“ to access it.
Has a year passed already? Has no notice that another tenner was due

Dear all,
I am a PhD student at the University of Reading and am conducting a farmer perception survey to understand how knowledge and perceptions of farmland birds influence land management in England. The questionnaire explores motivations to practice land management interventions that...
