Fodder beet: One of the few good news stories for tillage in 2023

Written by Richard Halleron from Agriland Teagasc is confirming that 2023 will be a good year for Irish fodder beet growers. This is assuming that they can get the harvest over the line. While it is still early in the season for harvesting fodder beet, early indications are that this year’s...

    What happens if...

What happens if I drill winter wheat in the spring? I'm assuming the world won't implode and I am also assuming it's less than ideal however, will I have a combinable crop? I have extase wheat here that I would like to have seed treated and then plant in mid april next year I keep having...

    Break crops

Taken on a lump of heavy land it’s been barley after barley after barley and I’m sure is sick of the stuff. It’s also as tight as and needs a good pull up. OSR I’m not impressed with the returns or the risk any more, And never got control of it till it was too late. Spring oats?. Nah too much...

    Pot ale syrup and sheep

Have the option of collecting IBC’s of pot ale syrup basically next door. Was hoping to feed it to ewes coming up to lambing with barley, oats, grass silage and fodder beet. Would it be poisonous due to high copper levels?

    New tractor

Next year we are 70 cows, Spring calving. Buffered maize in dry spells and turnips/kale over the winter, out pretty much every day for a few hours. Unfortunately even though we try to keep everything simple we still need a loader tractor, just can't see how it's possible without making life...

    Christ it's wet

Anyone else normally drilled up by now and not started. Ditches are down and water is getting away but it's sitting on top and drains have been jetted last year etc so they should be fine. It's like it's sat on top but there must be 6 inch of water to plough in more in places West Lancashire...

What are you doing in SFI?

A thread for grassland/livestock farmers. There's lots of discussion threads covering arable too but seeing as SfI seems to want to see the back of livestock farmers I was hoping we could share what we're doing to recoup some lost subsidies. the options seem few and some very negative opinions...

    Last field to be harvested.

17 acres of May drilled spring barley to harvest here, praying for Saturday to be as good as forecast. 14 acre of it looks ok, 3 acre in a remote corner not seen it so hope so. Am I the last?

    AHL2 - Winter Bird Food

Has anyone ever autumn established SFI AHL2 after a crop off winter wheat, grown fast seeding crops such as mustard and then gone into a spring barley late March early April? Probably a good reason why it isn’t being done!

Irish nitrogen limit reduced by the EU

Putting it in this forum due to the wider implications. Lots of livestock coming up for sale in Ireland it seems. 239million euro loss to the economy per year or they need an extra 69 million acres to spread existing livestock numbers over to reduce the nitrogen usage...

    How many kg of concentrates?

What's the most the high yielding people on here have fed to their cows? I've gone up to 13kg before but was wondering how much more I could push it? Will be for cows doing 50-60 if not more litres They'll be having 3-4kg rolled wheat, 4kg soya hulls and 1.5kg of hipro soya through the parlour...

Short of Silage, anything worth drilling in barley stubbles now?

I'm short of silage for the winter rather than grazing. for Suckler cows so my current plan is to mix silage and straw but for 75 cows I'm not quite going to have 2 bales silage per day + straw (they would normally eat 3 per day) ideally want to drill winter wheat into the stubbles. maybe into...
