As the title.
We normally drill Italian. We have 30 acres that won't need grass cut before Maized is drilled. Will also aim to Simba and drill rather than plough prefer not to leave it bear. Could use Italian but that does tend to leave quite a tight surface.
What are peoples suggestions.

One of my neighbours who is getting on in years has decided to cut back a bit and has offered to rent me a 9 acre field just down the road from here as it's 3 miles around twisty lanes from his farm and he doesn't want to be travelling about anymore. It's decent arable ground, not really stony...
What is silvopasture?
Silvopasture is a form of agroforestry where trees are deliberately planted to be part of a farms livestock system. Three tree planting designs are being trialled as part of a field lab investigating the benefits of agroforestry.
Planting trees to suit grazing...
At a recent Innovative Farmers event a farmer asked the question: which tree species should I choose to provide the best nutritional supplements for my dairy cows? Ideally, there would be a simple table of tree species with their nutritional benefits listed next to them, and this would answer...
UK farmers embark on a crucial agricultural practice that is pivotal to the success of their livestock management and forage production: autumn reseeding.
This is one of the most cost-effective on-farm investments. It involves establishing new pasture or fodder crops during autumn to ensure a...
It may not be the same in other parts of England but on the Cotswolds I see a huge hectarage of herbal leys coming on stream, presumably because of new stewardship schemes etc.
As not farming any more I am wondering how these leys are going to be utilised, or are can you still make a small profit...
Ciaran Collins, Teagasc Tillage Specialist, touches on the many benefits of catch crops and what farmers need to consider when establishing them as part of their ACRES plan.
The fact that cover crops reduce nutrient loss is beyond doubt. Multi-year research in Teagasc has proven that a mustard...
Do you have a problem with how others choose to farm ? Are you opposed to certain livestock management or crop establishment systems ?
Do you feel that certain practices should simply be banned ? Feeding soya meal ? Ploughing ?
Or do you take an 'each to their own' attitude ? Horses for...
Every time there is a downturn in prices we all have to think about our situation. I have done a bit of research from articles I have kept for years.
There were 153,000 dairy producers when the Queen came to the throne, when she passed 70 years 214 days later there were 7850 in England and...
We are thinking about changing to bolusing our sucklers rather than using Lifeline and GP mineral buckets. Primarily because in the last 12 months we’ve spent over £1200 on the aforementioned buckets for 40 sucklers, which seems excessive to me? The calving pattern is v drawn out so to get the...

Greetings hivemind - why can't farmers wait until January to cut their hedgerows? cutting in august / september removes a lot of fruit 'n' nuts which would be good for wildlife, no? But I think a big reason is in January the ground can be too wet, and big machines will damage the grass / soil...
Latest SFI update has now given option for NUM3 Legume Fallow to be rotational.
See screenshot of the guidance.
Non-rotated we have to establish within 13 months of agreement start date, so say we start agreement 1st Sept 2023, then we'd need to establish by 31st Aug '24, then leave it there...
