Direct/zero tilling without glyphosate, is it possible?

As above. I mention glyphosate but surely their must be a comparable, chemical, under development to succeed it ,as should it ever get banned worldwide, the market for a comparable is huge.

    I’ve made a huge mistake… (new sprayer)

A word of caution…. I sold my 2015 Amazone UX3200 sprayer a few weeks ago because it had done 70,000 acres and it was also tactically the right thing to do from a deprecation/tax point of view. i bought it new, and I can honestly say it never once let me down. Ever. I wanted a new Amazone...

    State of your crops 2023

Well I guess it’s time to start another annual thread about how peoples crops are looking at the start of the year. All pics taken today. Generally I’m pretty happy at present other than one but of rape that looks a bit thin in places thanks mainly to pheasants🙄 Wheats Skyfall Two year...

    Grazing Winter barley

Ive grazed wheats now for a couple years with positive effects and no yield penalty. But never grazed winter barley. Anything I should think about before a chuck a few hundred in lamb ewes out on barley? Worried about the growth profile differences between wheat and barley.

    Ergot

Ergot seems to be a problem again this year. I've seen it mentioned that Boron deficiency can cause this and increased SDHI use (with the loss of CTL?) can contribute to Boron deficiency. Can anyone add to this? Doesn't seem a correlation between other factors like variety or cultivations?

    Sprinter vs Sabre Tine

Currently considering a 6m sprinter on dutch/metcalf etc, but also giving consideration to Sabre tine (new type 4 row prob front tank). Anybody run both? Would be used either as direct drill or on very lightly cultivated ground? Sprinter would need full width packer for depth.

    Firming behind TS drill.

It's all very well waiting until now to drill, to try and beat the black grass, but of course it is always too wet to roll in November. Has anyone configured a lightweight packer arrangement on the back of one of these drills to leave a halfway firm and level finish? The L shaped covering Harrow...

    Winter Beans establishment

As the title, what are peoples opinion on best method of establishing when crows are a real problem.. I was going to wait until late November and if weather wasn’t suitable I’d wait and sow spring variety. If winter is possible I’m going to drop them on the ground with Horsch pronto and plough...

What level of percentage control does something like a disc get on chitted stubbles? we’ve got some grass weed fields that have greened up nicely but we won’t drill till mid October onwards so do I glyphosate now and then again pre drilling or do we disc now to kill the growth (does it though...

Avoid These Five Pitfalls When Drilling Later, Wheat Growers Urged

    1. Don’t drill based on seed weight – use seed numbers Seed rates need increasing to offset the shorter tillering period when drilling later, says Mr Scott, and to offset other risks such as slugs. But big variations in seed thousand grain weight this season make it particularly important to...

Is it safe to direct drill this?

So below is a silage aftermath that had all gone to seed after the drought so we cut and baled it. I'm just abit concerned that there appears to be quite a few residual grass seeds left over. The plan would be to direct drill winter wheat into this stubble after it has been burnt off with...

GB harvest 2022 is all but complete

Harvest of cereals and oilseed rape (OSR) in GB is now all but complete. There are occasional crops left unharvested in Scotland, although conditions have tended to be adequate for allowing clearance. Harvest was complete in England and Wales (bar a small area in the North East) by the end of...

Hold your nerve: keep wheat drills under wraps to beat black-grass

Farmers with a known black-grass burden shouldn’t be lured into bringing their winter wheat drilling date forwards just because large parts of the UK have seen improved soil moisture levels following the dry, early harvest. That’s the advice from Mike Thornton, head of crop production for...

Explaining the Morley Soil and Agronomic Monitoring Study

One of our over-arching pieces of current research is the Morley Soil and Agronomic Monitoring Study (SAMS).
