Several fields of hybrid rye where the crop has only really survived on top of drains. Maybe 20% of field areas actually growing, so no point patching. No spring fert or autumn herbicide at all. What to do?
Ground/soil is sadder than I’ve ever known it, and we’ve had some sad springs. Possible...
Hi just wanting peoples advice. We usually fed our dry cows bale silage but nearly out this year. We have plenty average clamp first cut and maize silage and brewers grains. What mix would people recommend?
With the DEFRA payments for not growing crops being a better risk-reward than growing crops. Should we seek to get EVERY ARABLE FARMER to declare they are going 100% into "Herbal Lays" etc. and 0% into combinable crops. (Maybe 0% feed crops, as I know many farmers are a bit workaholic)
We could...
We have been ploughing digestate down prior to sowing winter crops for years and have occassionally topdressed spring crop in May with digestate as well, however we have very little experience of applying it on winter crop in early spring. We normally retain most of our digestate for grassland...
Losing 100 acres of silage ground to our landlord, flipping our cow grazing acres and a bit more grazing ground into silage ground, keeping them in 365 tho, what silage replacers could I use? I’m thinking fodder beet, crush it on farm and buy cleaned, 7kgs a day would save roughly 300 ton of...
Just spotted on a local facebook group.
Selfish me, no animals on my land that could all have horses on as we speak!
Did make me laugh, and yes she's serious
A potential anaerobic digester just up the road from me had its Planning Committee meeting yesterday. They had already approached me to grow crops for them & take digestate back. I would prefer a break crop if possible. The farm has a significant blackgrass burden. Mostly brashy soils prone to...
Hybrid rye has been a complete failure this year, bugger all of it has grown just drowned in the ground... Can you get spring hybrid (or non hybrid if its any good?) for combining? If so what variety is best. We really liked the winter hybrid rye grown last year, shame its not worked out. Straw...

Getting the early agronomy of winter crops right is crucial a recent tillage conference heard.
Seedtech director, Dr. Tim O’Donovan, gave an agronomy update on a range of winter crops, during his presentation to the AgriCare tillage conference.
Where...

In my opinion, the recent AgriCare tillage conference helped to reset the ‘optimism’ button for farmers committed to growing crops in Ireland.
I know that 2023 has been a horrendous year for arable farming in this part of the world, but sometimes, it...

Can maize shrug off its reputation of being a much-scrutinised crop that damages the environment and poses a flooding risk? CPM joined growers at Severn Trent’s Stoke Bardolph AD site to learn how to maximise yields in a sustainable way...
As the title.
We normally drill Italian. We have 30 acres that won't need grass cut before Maized is drilled. Will also aim to Simba and drill rather than plough prefer not to leave it bear. Could use Italian but that does tend to leave quite a tight surface.
What are peoples suggestions.
Got some spring barley that is going to be late cut I suspect. After I want to out in a winter catch crop to feed suckler cows.
Ground is light and free draining. Location Devon near south coast so winters can be wet and often mild compared to other ares.
Drilling will be early Sept at best...
I didn't want to hijack the current thread on a similoiar topic.
I am going to have 10-12ha of S Oat stubble that is earmarked for Bumblebird mix next Spring. (Not CS or SFI) In the past I have been very happy to drill some of the "spring sown) mix in the Autumn and have an early start on some...
Winter hybrid rye SU Arvid posts excellent harvest results for Norfolk grower seeking higher gas yielding variety for AD contract
Of the 50,000ha of hybrid rye currently grown in the UK, wholecrop for biogas production is still the biggest single market, accounting for around half the UK crop...
Anaerobic digestion continues to be on the up, thanks to a combination of this year’s encouraging hybrid rye crops and further plants coming into operation.
Lucy Hopward from bioeconomy consultants NNFCC says of the 50,000ha of hybrid rye grown in the UK, around half is wholecrop and destined...

We're likely to start lifting wholecrop within the next ten days, which is about 3 weeks earlier than normal due to the very dry weather here over the last few weeks. We'll be sowing hybrid rye in late Sept/early October but it seems a bit of a waste to lave the field bare for 3 months.
Any...
Let’s start a harvest 23 thread! So how far do we all think we are from starting? Winter barley rapidly ripening here early start is on the cards. First week of july maybe, rape just starting to lose its greenness also!
