Sheep- what do folk feed when the grass runs out?

What do folk usually feed to keep ewes ticking over before starting concentrates closer to lambing? We usually just fed a small amount of ewe rolls from end December start of January on, but the feed bill would be scary these days. Tried beet but it’s expensive now.

    Salt

Hello everyone, my 300 cows are currently licking their way through 30 kgs of Cheshire salt blocks a day. That seems a lot to me. And expensive. Do they really need it or are they just doing it out of boredom. When they are out grazing they never touch the salt blocks

    Minette Batters NFU president

She's clearly biased towards the coporate members of the NFU compared to the farmer members. She's finishing naturally in February apparently but should she still be there today? When she first took over she was on the Red Tractor board and wanted to remain on it whilst being NFU president...

    Calves coughing terribly

Have a few batches of calves 3/4 months old coughing as bad as I have ever seen . Jagged the lot with Alamycin 2 days ago and have been doing anything that looks the slightest bit sick with Draxxin but haven’t seen much improvement. Always get a bit of bother at this time of year but this seems...

    Sheep High Energy Buckets

OK, that time of year again when I am pricing up buckets. What is everyone getting priced for Crystalyx, Optilyx from Downland and Rumenco Maxx, and how did everyone get on with them last year. Hearing that Rumenco are a fair bit cheaper but are they as good and as hard as the other two...

    Local Farming Expressions

Having worked in different parts of the country I aware of different terms used within farming. Some of which still make me smile.... Leading bales - is obvious, but I still see a bale wearing a show collar (like showing cattle) in my head! Reene - Open furrow left when finishing ploughing a...

    Rumevite blocks v SBP

Thinking of trying to free up some time for fencing in jan/Feb this year and looking at puting out feed blocks rather than a daily feed of sugar beet pulp pellets. How does the consumption of the blocks compare? Obviously you can’t really regulate how much they consume…..so how much do they...

    Suckler cow boluses

We are thinking about changing to bolusing our sucklers rather than using Lifeline and GP mineral buckets. Primarily because in the last 12 months we’ve spent over £1200 on the aforementioned buckets for 40 sucklers, which seems excessive to me? The calving pattern is v drawn out so to get the...

    Establishing clover in grassland

Morning everyone. Could I have some suggestions for establishing clover (white and or red) in mature grassland. I'm looking for alternative methods what don't cost much. I could graze it tight and drill it but timing, cost and weather really are big factors as I wouldn't have more than one...
