    Mastitis 2nd Dose OxyTetracycline(LA200) Reactions?

I have a ewe with mastitis who has already been treated with one dose of OxyTetracycline. Though her udder is improving, I have plans to retreat at the 48 hour mark. Has anyone else had issues or adverse reactions with a second dose of OxyTetracycline (LA200) for mastitis?

    The House Cow

I rear calves and have a growing family who drink vast volumes of milk…. Rather than spend huge amounts on milk powder and equally big sums on the milkman I’ve had a mad thought- how about a couple of house cows? I feed the calves twice a day so milking a couple of cows wouldn’t be too much of...

    Stocking density

Hi folks, we have a sixteen acre croft in the Inner Hebrides of generally good permanent pasture where we keep four acres to make haylage, the remaining twelve is for thirteen mule ewes and one tup along with three beef cows and annually born calves. The three cows leave the croft to be bulled...

    Barrier teat dips

I’ve been using Delaval Blockade for over 10years with excellent results but just priced some up and at £725 for 200litres (with a further price rise expected) I’ve about fallen off my chair in shock! I understand that Iodine has gone up a lot but surely not to that extent? What other barrier...

    Grazing cows, drought and Scc

Had a big spike in scc at our last milk recording. 20% of the cows above 250, bulk was running at 140-170, but has spiked now and clinicals are starting to show. My theory is when there on lots of silage they seem to spend more time lying down in the field on there own sh!te and less time...

Time to get calf sheds cleaned and disinfected

Written by Brian McDonnell from Agriland With calves now at grass the calf sheds on dairy farms should be empty, which makes it a good time to clean and disinfect them. The last few months on farms have been busy, with calving quickly turning into breeding and first-cut silage also thrown in...

Are faecal egg counts aiding the spread of parasites on farms?

Written by Brian McDonnell from Agriland Could employing faecal egg counts on farms to determine the correct time for dosing actually be aiding the spread of parasites on farms? Should farmers instead be dosing livestock while egg counts are low to prevent increased burdens and stop them...

    Blood in milk

Just had 3 case of bloody milk in 2 weeks, a few clots of mastitis in one. Used uddermint on the first 2 and it soon cleared up. Any ideas on cause? In 68 milkers so it's quite a high proportion. Not seen it mid lactation before, only in fresh calvers. Cheers

Declining Milk In A Re-homed Jersey Cow

4 days ago we brough home a 4 Year old Jersey cow. It was about a 2 hour journey from the farm we purchased here from. While at the farm they showed us how the milk machine worked on her (took about 7 litres out of her). They would normally milk her once a day in the evening. One day later...

What are current, all in costs of production?

Was chatting to a dairy farmer last week. He was saying his cost of production was pushing towards 40ppl, but was receiving 35p for his milk. He was hoping costs were slowly dropping, although was stuck on a nasty electricity price. Know it's a piece of string question, but where do you recon...
