So we rear alot of calves and sell at 4/5 months. Historically been sourced from market. With the obvious trial and tribulations with market calves, I think we do a v good job.
However I feel I've come to the end of the line on that route. What we achieve is probably the best that can be done...
Looking for a second hand milking parlour. 30+ unit swing over or a double up 20+ unit a side milking parlour. Delaval or GEA preferable but open to other options. Thanks
Any issues with feeding this in the parlour? Just going to place my first load and don't want a disaster.
Palm kernel is screened
Feed rep has warned about possibly not being that appealing to cows (bitter) but doesn't think it should be too bad. Plus I know people on here that feed it almost...
I,m looking to improve the lights in the milking parlour, because its a bit dark at udder level. What are your thoughts on placing 12v rope lights below the rump rail?
Rumen fluke here, and if it's here in the Highlands, it's everywhere 😱. We suspected a missing link, with losing a few healthy lambs last summer. Just suddenly going downhill for no reason, looking flukey but shouldn't be, and in spite of a very effective health plan.
After reading the comments...
Does anyone know what is the best way to shine boards of a plough so that the clay doesnt stick , i bought a plough and at the end of every run i scraped the boards but it still sticks
Good morning, as part of my university dissertation research, I am investigating dairy stakeholders attitudes towards climate mitigation strategies.
So far the results have shown over 35% of UK dairy farmers have engaged with some-form of climate mitigation strategy, with a further 90%...

So as we are all aware the weather patterns we are seeing are becoming a little more extreme
We are all losing days/weeks due to bad weather.
For me I seem to lose more and more working days each year for the last few years due to bad weather, this is obviously having a knock on effect in...
We don’t use a huge amount of straw. Maybe 40 tons a season. For large calf pens. (7) calving pad and colostrum group. Would the savings in straw usage given the ever rising price warrant the dust and cost of some
Sort of straw chopper/shredder? all but one pen would be easy access.
Anyone have any experience of putting in a used parlour? Would be bought in usable condition? Is it as simple as cutting and labelling cables/pipework in suitable locations and rejoining in new site or does it never end up as simple as that?
Any advice? Alot of guys having sales and giving up the ag contracting game. We don't plan on doing that and have a healthy business doing predominantly grass silage for dairy farms, slurry pumping/spreading and ag construction work.
Happy to pay good wages for good people.
I have friends and...

Although there are still many cows in the shed, and grazing has not fully taken off yet, it’s now time for silage preparation to begin.
The harvesting of first cut silage will hopefully be taking place on most farms in early to mid-May if conditions...

The importance of the role of the legume plant known as the clover, is growing on Irish farms.
Legal requirements to reduce fertiliser usage, along with needs to reduce chemical fertiliser for environmental reasons – as well as holding forage...
Bit hazy about how it was left at the end of the series, but I remember wondering how it was going to add up buying the farm as well as starting the dairy and building the processing unit.
But wow, that's a slick bit of work :(...
