The humble year of an organic farmer

Under request from @Bokey I have decided to dedicate a thread to the trials and tribulations on the farm, I shall endeavour to splice the good with the bad. A bit about us, 600 acres all told, 450 cropable, 8 years into organic, mainly arable with a few wooly critters, an impatient old man and...

    Wheat seed rates 2023

Thinking about starting drilling wheat next week. This early drilled stuff is going in mainly after early potatoes and some overwintered stubble that has been ploughed and pressed. We have subsoiled and disc & pressed after the potatoes. All seedbeds are really good and the nice bit of rain has...

    Sustainable farming

Sustainability is surely the thing on which the world needs to concentrate. Measuring carbon etc. is surely all smoke and mirrors compared to showing that you live, work or produce in a manner that is [at least in the main] , infinitely repeatable. It is clear that everybody has a view on what...

Belkar in OSR for fat hen/small nettle? 🤔

Hello Bit of a newbie when it comes to growing rape, it's a bit up and down this year in places and the fat hen and nettle has taken advantage of the smaller crop. Have attached some pictures and interested to hear opinions as to spray or not, I'm inclined not to at the price of £60/ha...

    Docks in grass seeds

Put grass seeds in about 3 weeks ago, they are up and away. Sprayed with roundup first, should I be spraying for docks again now or wait until Spring. I can see the little buggers there starting to grow. Our two Spring reseeds were not sprayed at all, tried to be clever, it didn't work, now...

    Spot spraying

So we have some established docks and thistles etc that I want to get rid of. Knapsack and quad sprayer. Grazon pro. Doxstar Pro. Pastor. Thistles. What to use? Rather have something that will work on all rather than just one weed but does it do as good a job?

Easy way to cut and clear small meadow?

Hi, our meadow isn't great for animals and only 2acres, I wondered if there is something I can use that could cut and clear it? Long term I'm interested in exploring ways of turning this into compost for our vegetable crops, though appreciate it will need to be heated to destroy seeds.

Do any TFF members use a Shelbourne Reynolds stripper header to harvest your wheat?

As above. If not why not as stripper headers are used to harvest wheat in North America. In theory it is the way to go to increase the output of a combine. Why haven’t strippers headers been popular in the uk???
