In the wake of unprecedented geopolitical and pandemic-related changes spanning the last few years, the UK’s agri-food labour shortage has been exacerbated. In the most recent government update released at the start of the year, it was announced that the Seasonal Worker visa scheme will now been...
Good afternoon all,
I wanted to let you know that we've opened the Sustainable Farming Incentive for applications today.
You can find a summary of what's available in this initial rollout here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/a-summary-of-the-sfi-in-2022 - we'll be expanding the scheme to cover...
I know the basics of pre em herbicides, a fine firm moist seed bed & don't disturb it afterwards.
But how does it actually kill the weed.
Does the weed germinate hit the pre em layer & die?
or Does the weed die as it germinates?
or is the seed discouraged from germinating & may even remain...
I have split a heavy clay field into 4. Direct drill, shallow cultivation, Plough and shallow discs with low disturbance to 200mm. This is the first year. 5th winter wheat, straw removed, FYM and compost applied April 2021 in previous crop. Unfortunately the grass weeds seem to have suddenly got...
Got a smattering of quite tall groundsel in a field of wheat.is it worth doing anything or will anything do anything at this stage to take it out or not too worry about it
I assume that livestock farming has its origins in being able to convert the non-edible plants into food, to make efficient use of summer surpluses and be a food supply in winter and to eat any waste while their waste had many uses.
I recently asked my feed supplier how much of the concentrate...
If you've been spraying su herbicides on cereals, then want to spray sugar beet. I use a tank cleaner such as All clear / tank cleaner
Usually with the rinsings I have a stubble field which I would opt to spray on.
If not, does All clear / tank cleaner have any effect spraying back onto...
Annoyingly, I see that I've missed a strip in one of my wheat fields, which is nearly at T1, and a large patch of well grown groundsel is very noticeable.
What can I use to kill it, given that all the chemicals in the spray store don't say that they will control it? Presently I have Eagle...
Wanting to reduce meal use next winter. Suckler to beef and sheep enterprise. No grain storage facilities. Wanting to grow grain and put in silo along with grass. What are the pro's and cons of wheat versus osts versus rye. Never grew grain before, educate me.
Has anyone managed to find a gp or doctor that will do a health check for sprayer operators? We are advised we need to offer it but can’t find any info on what the doctor needs to test for and who could actually do it. Our gp hasn’t got a clue about it.
Struggling with controlling groundsel, used Tribenuron last year at 30g/ha, seemed to work best when mixed with tebuconazole, so what adjuvants would have the same characteristics as teb?
Is there anything else that would give more reliable control, don’t want to use Dff as I think it kills soil...
Well seeing as it’s new year and last years thread on this topic ram to 80 pages, thought it time to start a new one for this year’s harvest.
I don’t have a lot of winter corn in but what I have is looking ok. The warm December certainly did no harm. A selection as off today.
Graham after...
Blackgrass control – Are you using enough Dihydrogen Monoxide?
Written by James Warne form Soil First Farming
Dihydrogen Monoxide or DHMO has been used for years to improve the distribution and performance of soil acting residual herbicides along with other uses such as a solvent, coolant, and...
We I didn't get my beans sprayed..... was going to apply kerb and pdm post emergence however agronomist is concerned that the kerb will knock yield... which is a real pita. So the other option is pdm followed by centerium max. I have low levels of bg
To drill winter barley now?
Long story short (probably won’t be 😂), just finish drilling the the last 50ac block of wheat today and I’m left with a little 5ac field that was supposed to be the last field and destined for a first wheat.
Anyway turns out I’m a bag of seed short 🤦🏻♂️ don’t...
