Easiest breed of cattle to finish off of forage based diet?

I’m wondering what breed of cattle are the easiest to finish (or as close as possible) off of a forage based diet only? It’s not a trick question, just re-evaluating what we do here, currently looking at the cattle side of things. We can’t out-winter, as the land simply isn’t suitable for it...

Hi, I recently sold my 12month old Hereford x Heifers at market after having them indoors for 6 months over the winter with the associated costs of cattle nuts, hayledge and straw. Other breeds of cattle at the sale of the same age and same condition/build were fetching 50% more than my...

Farmers do not take in to account Natives live cheaper than Continentals.

Melton Mowbray prices were poor for natives. Why? Natives do live cheaper and will even outwinter rather than spending on shed room and feed. They eat grass and grass products rather than expensive (now very expensive) grain rations. How do we get this across to the commercial suckler man? WB

If you had to choose a rare breed

My God daughter is doing a school project on food production. She has chosen to look into what makes people choose the breed(s) they have and why. The question she's decided on is if you had to pick a breed on the RBST watchlist which one would you pick and why? In the scenario, there are no...

    Dairy cows as sucklers

With the rise in price of fert, feed and seemingly everything else in this day and age some people I've been speaking to have been looking at not carrying as much stock over the next couple of years just to see how everything plays out. But on the other hand the rise of using sexed semen on...

Adding a new breed to a suckler herd

We are currently running Angus & Hereford bulls with cows and heifers and I’m in the past we’ve also ran a limousin as well. Looking to re introduce an easy calving limousin in the near future but also looking for another breed (tired stabiliser and it wasn’t great). Looking for a breed with...

What are my cows worth ?

How long is a piece of string? I have been milking for 45 years + and never bought or sold a milking cow, they’ve all gone as barrens, but I’ve reached an age when it’s time to give up. Easy option is an on farm dispersal sale so I know I am getting the true market value. Arriving at a value...

    Antidote to Venganuary

I always sell a fair bit of lamb through the spring/summer/autumn direct to individuals, pubs, restaurants and it does very well for me. But a couple years ago I decided to run a small pedigree Devon suckler herd with the ideal to sell beef boxes direct. Partly selfish reasons as I always...
