Crop Doctor – Disease slows in dry April

Written by cpm The cool, dry April has slowed crop growth, disease development and T1 fungicide applications. CPM joins the Crop Doctors as they get back out into the field to see how different varieties have fared at Cawood, Long Sutton, Callow and Great Tew. There’s a lot of leaf death and...

    Late wild oat spray.

I sprayed some of my wheat with it's T1 last week and added 0.1l/ha moddus grudgingly. It's now looking more scorched than I would like to see and now I'm faced with the decision as to whether to add topik I think for wild oats in with the T2 when the time comes or leave it. Normal treatment is...

    Spraying - low pressure

Spraying cereals, currently on red (04) flat fans. Wanting to reduce water volume to around 145-150, at 11k that would mean 2 bar or just over. Should that be ok or is it too low for some things - ie get a set of blue nozzles instead?

    Nitrogen 3rd pass

What’s everybody doing? Our milling winter wheats were planted mid October to mid November and so far had 165kg N. We are due another 80kg (liquid) to go for group 1 spec but whilst the calendar says go the crops I think are a month behind due to the dry spell. N2 went on a month ago but it’s...

    Hard Standing

Plan to make an area of hardstanding off the yard. Currently it is part of a field. Want to strip the top soil and then utilise road planings. Will probably roll down with a vibrating roller if needs be. Would this be up to withstanding turning from lorries and machinery running around on it...

    T1 Fungicide advice please

Hi all. Have been sent Skyway (very expensive) by my agronomist to apply as a T1 alongside Toledo, which I already have in stock. Wheat variety is Costello which I believe is very tolerant against rust- is there any advantage to applying the Toledo AND Skyway or can some more experienced arable...

Farm accidents claim four lives in three weeks

I've just been reading the latest Farmers Weekly Magazine and saw the article 'Farm accidents claim four lives in three weeks' which I found quite shocking. I there a way to make farming safer? Or do you just accept the risks? I'd be interested in peoples thoughts....

    Biostimulants

What are people's views/experiences of using biostimulants as a replacement for fungicides? Particularly Scyon. I questioned the inclusion of it from agronomist today and said it would replace ctl.

Could kick myself (moddus cock up)

Had a really busy day today, and made my first ever spray cock up, Was putting some Magphos and amino on my wheat today, and after talking with agronomist a few weeks ago I said send out some teb for the gleam and a bit of moddus or equivalent for a couple of really forward fields. Anyway...

To Growth reg or not to growth reg ?

Just wondered what people’s thoughts on cutting growth regs for T1. My current recommendation is 0.1 moddus and a litre of 3C. I have some 1/2 decent looking w wheat and w barley. We use all the straw ourselves. With the current cold weather and it not exactly romping away with spring growth I...

    Sustainable?

I'm not an arable man but keep an eye on hat's happening and am interested in the way the industry is headed. A fella near us has been sowing spring barley after getting caught out in the back end and left with a few hundred unsown acres. Most fields were disced twice, subsoiled, roterrad...

    Planet Spring barley fungicide

Have used 0.5l/ha Jaunt (Fluoxastrobin(75g/l) Prothioconazole(150g/l) Trifloxystrobin(75g/l)) the last couple of years with good results( have both been very dry springs with low levels of disease). With the loss of CTL what are people using this year?

    Bitersaltz vs liquid Magnesium ?

Having seen decent results from Magnesium with fungicide applications here I'm pretty convinced that along with Manganese t's a micronutrient worth using routinely on our soil types. Bitersaltz has been our cheap go-to product but it's not the most users friendly when filling a 6000L sprayer...

Spraying with a frost at night.

Got some fungicide, growth reg and manganese to go on wheat and barley but keep getting -1 for a few hours early morning. I’m holding off at the moment, are people still spraying and do they have any bad scorching
