    Feed to yield

Just wondering if anyone has gone from Batch feeders to feed to yield and seen enough of an ROI to justify it? Some of my fatties are slowing down pretty quickly but still 80% of them firing out the milk. I would like more control but need a sensible return.

Selecting the right fodder beet variety to maximise returns.

Yield and consistency are still key but consider your farm system requirements first says Adam Simper of Agrii If grown correctly, with the right establishment and input strategy, fodder beet will outyield many other forage crops and provide a consistent and reliable high-energy feed source...

Anyone feeding peas to sheep as a protein source?

We feed beans to cattle as protein easily enough but people always say that beans have tannings in which isn’t great for sheep. So we buy 12 tons of soya a year for the sheep but it’s expensive and I like to grow all our own feed so wondered if anyone was using peas?

How do you find a work/life balance dairy farming? Or don’t you?

I’m curious how other small dairy farmers (by small I mean under 100 cows and no employees) find a balance to keep the farm going and still have time to sleep and see friends and do other normal people things? I recently moved back to our family farm/homestead that is a working dairy and am...

    Sheep eating straw??

A title that sums up this section of the forum nicely, I feel. I seem to have rather more ewe lambs kept back for tupping Autumn 2023, than I originally envisaged this time... Best laid plans, etc etc... ;) I have now got 50 odd lambs in the Solar farm, and anticipated feeding some hay to...

Do you know how fibre is affecting rumen health?

Ruminant digestive systems have the ability to degrade and ferment fibre through microbial activity. The fibre components, and the subsequent production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs), provide the majority of the energy for the ruminant. But energy (and milk) production is not the only role of...

    Why oh why

Why oh why do dairy farmers .. and not just UK ones .. fall for the temptation of producing more and more milk as soon as the milk price is the best it's ever been? Is it not obvious that less is best and a level profile gives the processors less reason to reduce the price per litre? So often...

    Bulling period.

We are mainly dairy but do run a small group of suckler cows of 20. It made me wonder was my ‘hobby’ herd been run out of...

What to feed weaned dairy bred calves

So I'm looking at a cost effective way of feeding beef calves out of dairy cows. Currently they are 3-4 months old, eating 3kg of 16% rearing blend a day and ad lib hay. The idea is to get them through to April/ may and sell them. They are doing well but at circa £380 tonne I'm worried there'll...
