A local dairy farm has asked us if we’d think about growing some whole crop rye and forage maize for their dairy herd which they want to expand but don’t have the land to provide the forage needed. So what could we expect yield wise (realistic please say 6 yr average) if built into an arable...

The early bird catches the worm – so the saying goes, and this is no truer than when applied to getting ahead of disease in cereal crops. CPM explores how targeted early season agronomy can make all the difference.

The science behind the Sustainable Farming Incentive

Through the Sustainable Farming Incentive, we're paying farmers to carry out actions that support both a sustainable farm business and a healthy natural environment.
Food production relies on...
Local farmer offing to grow me a pea barley forage crop for me. Would be bought as a standing crop and put over a weigh bridge.
Anyone got an idea of how much this should cost me per t as it new to me?
Thanks for your help.
As per the title, got some difficult grass land (patchy sward, terrible drainage, dries out over summer) that I'd like to improve.
Trying to avoid tillage and spray...
Can I drill anything in this spring, that will get a root down, build organic matter, and can be grazed by cattle?
TIA
Does any small engineering firm make a 3m basic tine direct drill, I'm looking at making a 3m tine drill with metcalfe legs/tines, 250mm spacing, 11 legs in total, following harrow with hopper and accord type metering.
Something similar to what @Wombat built, probably based on 80mm box frame.
Anyone tried Spring oats drilled now (early Feb) as a harvestable and ensilable catch crop - late April - before maize?
Apparently it's relatively common in America but different strokes out there
This is a question for people cleverer than I, because I can’t find an immediate answer online, and I don’t know how to work it out myself.
We, all of us, grow food. Be it beef, lamb, potatoes, cereals etc etc. All of this is made up of a % of the co2 either the plant has sequestered, or the...

If we use fertilizer like urea, calcium ammonium nitrate or ammonium sulfate; in how many days can the plant start to use it or start to absorb it with it's roots? Are the any researches about it?
Based on RL data and parental diversity information, use the variety blend tool to select three-way or four-way mixes for on-farm testing.
Varietal mixtures increase genetic diversity within a field and may help slow the spread of some diseases and reduce the risk of resistance breakdown. Based...
We’ve grown an overwinter black oat and vetch cover crop that up until the frost came in December was looking really healthy, now it’s just dead on the floor and left very little to graze with sheep, bar some wheat volunteers and a few patches of annual meadow grass.
We have rape in the rotation...
Well I guess it’s time to start another annual thread about how peoples crops are looking at the start of the year.
All pics taken today.
Generally I’m pretty happy at present other than one but of rape that looks a bit thin in places thanks mainly to pheasants🙄

Hi all,
I was hoping to pose a question to this group: in what practical ways is the cost of living crisis making it more difficult to look after your animals? I am a student studying agriculture as part of my course and I'm trying to get insights into how difficult it is to run a farm currently...
WHAT IS ERGOT?
Ergot is a fungus that grows on rye, triticale, wheat and barley, and to a lesser extent, oats. It also affects a wide range of grasses, particularly blackgrass. Although the disease has a relatively small effect on yield, ergots contain large amounts of toxic alkaloids that can...
