Success of direct drilling in long term.

Having used a Dale drill successfully for 20 years of notillage leaving all straw chopped on the surface with a mix of autumn and spring sown cash crops . I have come to the conclusion that a notillage idealist approach is maybe not the answer and we have to be flexible to aerating the soil...

Will there be ANY fertiliser available next year?

Unless the Ukraine situation gets sorted in the next 6 months, will there be any fertiliser of any sort available next year, at any price? But then 5 t/ha wheat at £300, with much lower direct costs, might not be all that bad.

    Bare minimum N rates

Seriously considering splitting what nitrogen we have in the shed across 2 seasons. Had planned to go with 140N/ha on both wheat and osr, dropping to 70kg N would insulate us from high N prices in 2023 but potential would drop to 6-7t/ ha I think. Averaged 8.3t in 2021 on 60:40 1st and 2nd...

Glyphosate - Bayer calls Force Majeure

Just heard Bayer have called Force Majeure on their glyphosate contracts....! It's going to be a rocky ride ahead. With this and fertiliser prices it's looking quite attractive to fallow things next year.

    Spring OSR

How do people get on growing Spring OSR? Has anyone had any recent experience with it? Following end of August combined S.Barley and felt it was too late to drill WOSR, kicking myself because as it turned out we probably would have been fine with the open Autumn we have just had. Heavyish land...

Evening all . As part of our rotation on the dairy we have around 150 ac of oats and wheat in the ground, it’s predominantly heavy clay land but (ploughed out of grass and p/Harrow drilled- rolled ) all crops are looking well at the moment and historically “winter well “ then come spring the...
