Having topped Skipton’s winter sale with 8,100gns bitch High Peak Gem , Dewi Jenkins replicated the feat at the Rhiwlas estate with three-year-old dog Bill.

This time the hammer fell for 9,200gns (£9,660), with Bill heading up to Scotland with K Donald.

Sired by Dewi’s own dog Moss, and out of K Price’s Fly, he arrived at the sale with a reputation as a top quality trialling and working dog.

I don’t have either, was just interested on how the dog was valued above others, obviously it is a business investment so maybe value of pups comes into it. like I said I don’t know about sheep dogs. My gun dogs are priceless to me though

Looking at the video the dog has attributes that both regular farmers (stands up to tough hill sheep) and trialists (is stylish) would like, so there is going to be a stud value there. The dog looks like a genuinely good dog that would save hours of work on a large sheep farm. Obviously the breeding plays a large part in the price as well.

Who pays that kind of money? Used to know somebody that used to sell sheepdogs regularly for £5k plus. They mostly went to other trialists, wealthy lowland farmers and a surprising number went to people with connections to horse racing.

Did you think it was worth £6k? (I know nothing about sheep dogs)

He never actually sent me a video to look at (if I liked what I saw I'd of gone to look in the flesh). I had bought something else before he got round to doing a video. i watched the video of it it for the bala sale and it looked decent enough but it is so hard to value a good dog. it can depend on the sellers most of the time.

Some people don't spend money on other things and will pay what it costs.

Don't want to brag, but I've sold dogs (not sheepdogs) for a lot more than that and know others who sold for a lot more than me!

Dogs like that are worth what the buyer has to pay. If you had to cost it out, the years of breeding and training, the dog is probably cheap!
