That's not correct, provided you are out of contract you can get your existing supplier to requote along with anyone else. Even if you are in contract if you pay the penalties you can change tariff.
The Farm Energy Centre are always a good place to start.
Just a word of warning, if you have multiple meters make very sure that the new supplier has adopted the correct one, often they just take the one at the top of the list.
When I changed last year having been with Swalec for 40 years I asked them if they could do it any cheaper, they said the rules state that they cant give reductions to existing customers only new ones

They are pulling your plonker! It may be their rules but it isn't anyone else's. They must have thought "he hasn't moved supplier for 40 years, we'll empty his wallet a bit more".
For example, my bills from EdF have a section where they tell you if one of their tariffs is cheaper.

Well I wasted a good 20 minutes online earlier trying to understand the co op bill, it is all in pretty colours, Blue for credits to the account, yellow for the bill, pink for the debit against it, and according to that, I am still in credit, but paid what they sent me the email bill for, and now that does not even show.
Then tried in vain to find how to swap to another tariff with them, gave up with that as I could not find a way past the "are you a midshires member"
I really do not have the will to phone them.

Why is it so complicated :scratchhead:

Yes, I agree, I was told in the email there was a cheaper tariff with coop, trying to find it is a little more taxing though.
As far as I am aware, your supplier has to inform you about cheaper tariffs.

I am with Scottish Power, have had zero problems with them. Send my meter readings every month and settle up monthly by direct debit.

Mother is with SP and they even moved her tariff to a lower one, but they seemed very high compared to others for me.

Finally got my head around coop site  and managed to swap to a new tariff, did a comparison check on money supermarket first, and coop still came out cheapest by simply changing my tariff, projected savings of around £90 for each

Better in my pocket than theirs (y)

I swopped a few weeks ago, and am still waiting to see how many letters British Gas will send demanding the 2p I owe them! All companies are supposed to put if a cheaper tariff is available (the loose words of the ruling mean they get away with giving you their cheapest tariff which was not the idea of the ruling). British Gas gave me a tariff through Sainsburies which turned out to be British Gas. The tariff was cheaper if you were duel fuel which I was not, and they knew this!

So many of the problems caused when switching come from admin staff using postcodes for identification instead of the proper Mpan Number.

And why oh why do they insist on giving a monetary amount for the "saving" instead of just the Unit cost and standing charge figures and letting you work it out for yourself !!!! Do they not belive that the general public is bright enough to work a calculator ? (Actually they may have a point !!)

I swapped from British Gas & Electricity North west about 18 months ago, to a dual fuel account with the Co -op
I am afraid it was better the devil you know.
Co- Op hopeless, struggle to get a correct meter read bill from them despite filling in the cards for the meter readers, who it seems, then do not log it into the system, you then get a snotty email from the co op themselves 'Demanding' a reading, which you supply them with, only to receive yet another estimated bill.
Sent them a strongly worded email, and got a reply back to say I was £170 in credit, followed by a demand for £262 in the post a couple of days later.
Lost all confidence in them now, one hand does not know what the other does.

Should have known better when it took them months to contact previous suppliers to make the switch.
We were with GB Electric which went bust last week and have just received an email from Co-Op who are taking us on, no need to do anything, will honour GB's rates, etc. :)

Then read your posting. :(

I stick by what I posted, they offer good rates, but are very hard work to deal with, and keep an eye on tariffs, they continually offer lower ones than the one you are on.

Just had yet another estimated bill despite having sent them readings for both meters, and I notice, they have put previous reading as estimated, which it was not.
Lowri Beck the co they use for meter readings never ever knock on the door to read meters, they simply stick a card through, even if you fill in the details as they request, they dont come back to take that down, then you get a snotty phone call from them asking for the reading, you give it, and they dont ever seem to put it into the system.
