£8 minimum Wage

Saw the Reds want an £8 minimum wage (per hour!) I wonder, taking things like houses that come with the rent etc, how many farmers make minimum wage. I know I dont.

I wouldn't pay our apprentice that. On the other hand I wouldn't pay him as little as the apprentice rate either (£2.90 an hour I think).

How is he going to pass his driving test, buy a Vauxhall Corsa, insure it, fit it out with £1.5k of stereo to blow his ears out, and then crash it into a ditch, on £2.90 an hour?

Clive you wouldn't pay a kid out of school £8/hour, your drivers are skilled enough to roll a Fendt without killing anyone....

I would pay anyone capable of the job at least that - I pay harvest students more than that and they are only just out of school yet perfectly able to do the job taught and then asked of them

Would you include wild oat pullers, taty graders etc in that remit?

I don't employ any but if they are doing a useful job yes I guess I would

Just because farmers are prepared to work for next to nothing doesn't not mean its fair to expect others to do so

£8/hr is only just over £16k per year - can anyone live on that these days, rent a house, run a modest car to get to work, eat, clothe themselves and have any possibility of saving for the day they can't work, pension etc ?

I've been paying a couple of polish lads 10/hour to cut bushes in one of our dales for stewardship.

They can't half shift some work in a day, and seem very pleased with there wage. I have also been taking them down a bacon sarnie apiece when it's chilly and recently gave em a crate of Stella as a thank you for there efforts.

I supply all the gear.
