how do you respond to that moment in a dignified way!?
Its not illegal.
I do it sometimes. If someone is trying to travel between two roads its no big harm
I was going to plead guilty too. Sometimes I'm lost others it's a means of getting from 1 road, or track, to another. Its not illegal.

At what stage does allowing bicycles over a footpath lead to claims of rights to other for wheeled and powered transport with all of the issues that raises?

But isn't pedal power quite legal on rural footpaths. And what about pushchairs -even though they have to carry them over boggy bits.
These folk buy our produce. And those that pay tax, or would like to earn enough to pay tax, help provide our subsidies.
But don't get het up abut it.
Nothing bad about pushing a bike on a footpath. Riding them on a footpath is another matter. Just my view.

they were trying to get to a bridleways about a mile away, over two farms,
when I asked them what they were on they both agreed it was a footpath and looked shifty when agreeing that you can’t have bikes on footpaths.
it’s not really about the harm they would do, it’s more the principle that you can’t cycle on a footpath and if they do it then suddenly it gets shared on social media and loads turn up ‘pushing their bikes’.
