“Hemp”have any of you grown it in the Uk?

I was working in Hampshire in the early 90’s & I saw it being round baled, for the fibre.

The seeds & oil are where the biggest potential seems to be at the moment, here

I am not too sure .
To start with,I believe in the UK one has to go through a lot of Bureaucracy to apply for license to grow it, and that might only allow one to grow it for the seed , the hemp itself having to be destroyed , but I may have misinterpreted what I have read.
Do you need a license to grow it Aus?
There were a couple of threads on this last year. @Daniel Larn was looking to find growers for one firm.

Someone local to me grows it for oil

My son is in Canada, lots grown around him, usually they put maize on the headlands to keep the locals out. What surprised me was the amount of tobacco grown.

Run away as fast as you can. Got a good rogering from the Essex bandits back in the day. Retting is the big issue in the U.K. due to dew in the autumn. Didn’t bother the Romans who grew it on the Island but bothered the bandits bigly

Hemcore were the firm allegedly dealing with the contracts. I don’t know anyone’s crop actually made the grade for fibre and got paid for it.
May be time for a thread in cropping titled ,
“Specialty Crops that have burnt your Fingers”!!!
Either through very low uneconomic yields,at best, unable to harvest or even worse combined but you never got paid as company went bust you grew the crop for!!

before my time, but seems there was a flax growing group round here back in the day that dad was in. It’s funny, every once in a while someone makes reference to an old JD mower conditioner that was parked up/abandoned in a corner of a yard with the drum absolutely bound tight with the stuff.
it must’ve been really bad for my old man to give up on it, I’ve never known him to throw the towel in on anything.
Is it still there or was did you eventually unblock it with an acetylene torch, job done

dunno about “speciality” crops, but I once delivered 250 tonne of sunflowers that I never got paid for. That hurt . . .

I planted a 14 hectare trial block on irrigation country for a neighbour a few years ago. It was to be grown for the seed, used in food products & oil. There were no real restrictions or license involved, the only advice from the police was don’t talk about it too much
But, it was very low / nil in THC.
For people growing medicinal cannabis, it is a WHOLE different ballgame, with licenses & very high security
