We do use it for contractors - gateways for fields of straw to bale etc. I tried it with Severn Trent water for a leak on a rural road last year. They didn't use it and they just kept asking for a post code. As it was 1/2 mile from our house I was able to give that, but I wouldn't have known the postcode if I didn't live here!!!!!

I am not alone with STW then!! :)

It's all the dots, dashes and commas. OK if you are familiar with the process, possibly easier to say 3 words...? :)

I thought we'd already established they would be sent by text message or something?

Problem with the words is that pronounciation is everything, so you may have to spell the words if not a native/ heavily accented. Miss of the 's' for a plural and you can be on the wrong side of the world.

There's places for both, but let's not claim it's perfect or even better - it's just different.

Can't argue with your closing sentence at all :)

Which sat nav system/mapping system do you find best for getting you to an isolated ( in the middle of a field) “What3words” location.
Or do all sat nav/mapping systems only direct you via a public highway nearest to the “What3words”, position then you have to do your own navigating?

I don't see the point. We already have the entire planet covered inch by inch with traditional grid refs. I don't have a mobile, but presume you can call up your grid ref. on it? I guess the numbers are too big...
In that case, W3W is definitely pointless - you can use google pin.

What's the text number for Police Scotland then? I know the voice number is 101 or 999, and if there's a voice on the other end then I'm certain my message has been received.

Not so fast. 7th of October 2018, came on a biker who had collided with a car in a very serious state. First 999 call went to the English side, it wasn't passed on. Made another call 10 minutes later to request air ambulance, tried giving latitude and longitude, and the call handler couldn't repeat the correct numbers. Tried 5 or 6 times, she just couldn't do it, absolutely useless, while I'm telling the guy moaning on the tarmac that "help is on it's way".
Long story short, police arrive at the 45 minute mark, 2 ambulances arrive at 48 minutes, and tell me they were only called on 10 minutes prior. Air ambulance arrived 5 minutes later, the guy died at 80 minutes where he had fallen.
Dont think the Scottish Emergency services call handling will save you, it's an utter shambles.
Now have 'what 3 words' on the phone.

For 'state of the art', have a look at the Swiss 'Rega' system and app. It's an air ambulance subscription service that costs a family about £50 - £60 a year, and is designed to have a helicopter with a casualty within 18 minutes of anyone in Switzerland who uses the emergency GPS location button on the smart phone app, which you can also use to send a picture of the scene. The average response time is actually 17 minutes, day or night.

Thank you for telling us of very the tragic accident you came upon back in 2018, something that I guess non of us would ever forget.
Off topic.
Many thanks for mentioning the Swiss 'Rega' system and app, as I have never heard of it before. I have just watched the video of "Rega" history ,it must have a fantastic amount of subscribers , patrons, donations and legacies to finance the organisation especially when they reequipped with new aircraft and helicopters, and then there are the everyday running costs !!!!!!!!!!!
