As above!!
Can't understand why everyone says they the best there is. But budget for a new vario if you buy one.( Unless you are rich enough to buy new . )Ie expect it to break !!! How can this be the best. And no one can deny they are VERY expensive.

Isn't this box used in lots of other brands as well ?

I recall a JD autopower box not getting to 3k hours on a neighbours farm never mind 10

Personally I would expect 10k old machines of any brand to break down and need expensive parts periodically

how much is your average fendt vario then? or is the labour the killer
they dont repair them just swap them for a new one and the repair could be a 50p o ring high time man in van got in on the act as they are simple enough things if you could source parts.12k for a new box

They are actually fairly simple. More complex than a Ford 5000 but less so than a four speed semi-powershift with six speed synchro box, like a JD Power-quad I'd say. There's a pump and a motor, an epycyclic, a high/low range, a few rams to turn the pump and motor, a couple or three shafts and a front propshaft brake.
All of the clever stuff that you have control over as a driver and all the automatic functions are just what the computer does to control the pumps and motors.

I can see no reason on earth why skilled mechanics could not repair these transmissions if given some training and had parts available to them. From its inception and up to today, Fendt want to keep control on the quality of any repairs done and to inconvenience customers as little as possible by having cassette type factory exchange units. The customer gains from minimum downtime [not in this case, but Fendt has to verify that this qualifies for warranty replacement and there's a lot of money involved] and a full warranty on the repair.

In this particular case, although the CVT unit and transmission case will be replaced, because it will probably be a full warranty repair the actual warranty on the replacement will run out at the same time as for the rest of the tractor. Normally when a customer pays for the repair you would expect a six or twelve month warranty on the parts bought of course.

Edit
I'm mixing up two different topics here it seems. That's what comes of not paying attention. Never mind, it is quite relevant to both topics.

Old place used to have 3 716's, when sold they had 12000 to 15300 hrs on all with original boxes as did my 818 though with just over 8000 hrs on it

Yes but some people like to spread rumour, cry wolf. If used correctly and serviced to schedule why shouldn't they last.
I agree. Some drivers are not skilled operators, just the nut behind the wheel who doesn't care about the equipment or how it works , has no idea how to get the most out of the equipment and dosnt care. get the job done ,get paid, it's not mine ,I don't care if it goes bang through abuse.!!!

Yes. Aslong as they can see the front wheels going round, that's all that matters.
Most tractors should have a days training course like combines. I know a few who can't or won't set a spool valve to time and flow, never mind getting the best out of a cvt / vario / auto shift box. And don't get me started in the 35 psi mentality tyre lot

Have a 716 with 9700 hours on it on original box with no problems yet touch wood! A local contractor near here has just replaced the first vario box on his 926 with around 14000 hours on it. Another contractor beside me had a box go on his 7490 at 4000hours, took the unit out himself to see what was wrong, turned out it was a seal away, managed to get a seal for it and put it back together, it went ok for a few hundred hours then it stopped again, iirc the second time it stopped a bearing had collapsed and had done a bit of damage so he rang round and managed to get a second hand vario which has took the tractor up to 9000 hours with no problems with it yet. The tractor was chipped fairly early on in its life and still is so maybe that had something to do with it, it also had been used on a plough in range 2 before the vario gave bother. Servicing and proper driving seem to be key to getting decent hours out of them and a bit of luck maybe!
