So where did it all go wrong ?
From the comfort of my armchair, let the criticism begin.

Too late with the first lockdown.
Too quick ending the first lockdown.
All planes should have been grounded since last February.
f**king " get back to normal " crap over the summer, packed beaches, illegal raves, and £10 meal subs.........
Chuffing Christmas. Would it have hurt to miss a year ?
Latest lockdown not well observed at all, busy roads, busy towns....
More could have been done over the internet IMO, I've had to make trips to accountants etc that I feel were unnecessary. Loads of morons turning up at the door looking for footpaths/ wanting a look at their boat in the shed etc.
Unnecessary inspections. Yes Red Tractor, that includes you.
Track and trace...waste of time and money.
f**k it, we'll be vaccinated soon attitude.

Anyway, for a small island we've ended up with the world's highest death rate. Not much to be proud of is it ?

Too many moaning & not doing what they are told.

Lack of people just doing their best with out been told or rewarded.

Thank goodness for all the vacccines & what a mess it could have been. It is not over for quite some time yet, maybe years of small outbreaks until the vaccine is tweaked for mutations.

This has only been a pratice run, Spanish flu was at least a hundred times worse.

A couple of small points for balance:

Excess winter mortality for 2018/19 was the lowest it had been since the winter of 2013/14 and was statistically significantly lower than the winters of 2017/18 and 2016/17 which suggests that some of those 100,000 would have died in previous recent years if flu infections had been higher.

Some of those 100,000 would have been flu victims for this winter 2020/21 but levels of flu infection are very low so far.

Lots more interesting graphs and charts for covid 19 versus other respiratory infections so far this winter here:

That's WITH a year of lockdowns. That graph would be off the scale by now without lockdowns. We would have at least 250,000 dead and no effective health service by now if some measures hadn't been taken. That really would be the dark ages. But hey, as long as the pubs are open and I can fly off to Ibiza for a pee up what's not to like eh?

Good list.

I would add that it was/isn’t helpful when it was repeatedly mentioned that there were “underlying health conditions” in lockdown one at most deaths plus, of course, that the median age of death was 82

Now, we are seeing Long Covid and many more younger, supposedly fitter, people dying.

The implication of daily death figures that are used to scare people is that these are extra deaths when clearly they are not.
17000 people died last week maybe 200- 300 more than same week in worst year of last 5.
With age and demographic adjustment that figure falls further.

388 healthy people under 60 by the end the year died after a positive test.
Those with significant co-morbidities face increased risk of dying from a number of causes, including other respiratory viruses.

So who is telling the truth then, mate? Is Coronavirus deaths just a made up global scam? EDIT. There were 17,700 deaths in the week ended Jan 8/2021. This was 5570 more than the same week last 5 years average.

We dont have the highest death rate in the world, others also count differently, we shut down the same number of days after the first case as most countries, we have a higher proportion of black and ethnic races, a dense population base and are often very unfit, fat and diabetic, none of those are the government's fault, the biggest issue was the care homes, but where else could those old folk go ? The wasnt the room in hospitals for them so where else was there ? I have asked quite a few people what they would have done with these old people, not one can answer. A lot already had covid in hospital so were probably doomed, the ones they gave it too might have survived if their relatives had taken them home instead of leaving them for someone else to care for, I know not everyone can care for elderly relatives but many were off work .

Yes, you are right that many who have been recorded of dying of Covid would have died anyway of flu, pneumonia or such like.
But the point is many many more would have died if we hadn't been in lockdown.
I realise a lot of people die every week even at the best of times. The point is the proportion catching and dying of Covid would increase exponentially without restrictive measures in place, until we have vaccinated more people.
Its not so much the numbers that are the worry, its the rate of change. Where would the graph of infection and death be now if lockdown had not been applied. It would be through the roof by now. Its clear to see there was a welcome downturn in infection rates following lockdown. It worked.
If you are doing a steady 70 mph in your car its not a problem. If you put your foot to the floor and don't take it off quickly enough you will soon be over a 100 mph and lose control. The idea behind the lockdowns is to take your foot off the pedal before you lose control.
I don't know about your area but it isn't every year that families we know are nearly killed by a virus, then left with nobody really knows what long term health issues. It's a new and dangerous virus. I agree with erring on the side of caution in trying to limit its spread until the vaccine takes hold.

The figures he put up are wrong. There were over 5000 extra deaths, not just 200-300.

If the Virus has the ability to mutate into a more deadly entity.

Then unfortunately the virus currently has every opportunity to do so thanks to a complete failure on the part of multiple governments, authorities and agencies - all of which are paid to do the complete opposite.
