No impact so far as I can see. Rolled 25% again this week.

I think now is the twilight zone where only those that are forced out with no other option would leave the industry. It's such a bad time now that you just have to keep going in the hope you make it out the other side.

We've decided not to ease back on production. The only way we could do that in such a way as to alleviate the current crisis is to cull live pigs. That's not something we want to do, nor have we yet been forced to do by circumstance. We are fortunate in that we have space to put excess pigs. Cash is the only thing that is likely to force our hand on that issue.

Stopping serving would only have an effect in 4 months time, but it's effect would be felt for years to come. If we did stop serving, or ease back sow numbers, I have no doubt that sod's law would ensure we had a dip in production just at the time the job comes right.

My hope - with all due respect and compassion for my friends in Europe - is that they aren't surviving. There's only one way for this to come right, and that is for production to decrease.

There has been a massive upswing in pig prices in China, owing to resurgence of various diseases, apparently the Chinese are planning to restore export licences to the processors in the UK that lost them. So we might just be starting to see the tide turn.
With the upcoming fall in production that will be seen in the UK and Europe from those who have cut back or exited, next year looks a lot more rosy. We might even be able to afford these crazy grain prices.

I'm certainly no expert on pigs but I got dragged round Morrison's yesterday and I have never seen such fat on the cuts. Christ it was an inch thick on some,how long does it take to put that much on past usual finish?

Well that's the best rumour I've heard in months. You never know, they may decide ASF in German wild boar isn't so much of a threat to national security after all. That really would turn the pig world right side up again.

It’s too big, so the cuts of meat won’t fit the packets for the supermarket.

Ridiculous, isn't it? I was in Tescoes one day and saw the 'assistants' busily pulling loaves of bread off the shelves.

Me: "What's going on here?".
Them: "Oh, someone has put the wrong date on these loaves".
Me: "So what are you going to do with them now?".
Them: "They have to be binned. Takes too long to re-label them and we can't sell them as they are".

A practical person would gut those pigs, freeze them, and ship them off east. I don't think the Chinese are too bothered how they are cut up, they'll want to eat them, not look at them.

Friday night 3rd December Gammons in ASDA Grantham were labelled EU packed in UK. Most of the beef was Irish, as usual. Only British beef marked as such were steaks in single overwrap packs, again as usual. Much of the 'French type' Cheese was only French too I noticed - so no Somerset Brie for example as an alternative.

lots of pork steaks in Asda last week from Germany! I appreciate we are short of butchers and European pork is cheap but killing and dumping British pigs whilst importing don’t think british farmers will forgive or forget processors and supermarkets for a long time. Struggling to sell decent numbers of pigs even at bargain prices ( less than £1 kilo ) and its three weeks of Christmas. The whole system is broken answers on a postcard please ( don’t send them to British govt because they don’t give a shite)
