I’m sorry but if you ask me it’s sad but true that the pig and chicken sectors have brought this on themselves… in a race too the bottom they’ve been buying up/ renting land all over the country the last few years banging up sheds recklessly left right and centre in a bid to expand into the cheapest fastest meat possible as big and fast as possible… it was always going too catch up with them eventually…

And how many uk pig breeders then and now? … I bet them the average pig herd was 50 and now is 50,000
14000....so not a great fall considering the decline of the sow herd

But held in far far less hands , dominated by massive company’s , days of the family pig farm all but totally over. Sheep and beef next .

i was thinking today having read another poster stating two early sixty yr old pig farmers were in tears ,i may be lacking empathy, but i wondered how many smaller family pig farms they might have 'sent to the wall'

No doubt about it it’s just a massive race to the bottom , looks like the finish line is in sight .

10000 pig farms....but 1000 of those farms have 360000 of those sows.......of that 10 corporate firms control 140000 sows
Exactly my point.. there’s pig place near here and there is literally pigs as far as the eye can see in every direction how they manage them Iv no bloody idea because there’s thousands of them in individual houses and big houses with multiples in it’s crazy

I reckon it's more to do with the retail sector controlling production.

Sheep and cattle wil go the same way if we lose the livestock markets.

Absolutely but the pig and chicken men have put themselves in that situation with the big is better attitude… in the last 5 years everywhere you drive there’s massive units going up for pigs and chickens.. pigs going out on bed and breakfast on massive rents…. It’s total madness and it was always going too tumble down the hill bloody fast when the dam eventually gave way…

Some of the corporates are sitting on millions it takes a while yet to pressurise them, this is their wet dream .

So the average herd size is 40 sows
The largest 1000 farms average 360 sows

So what would the flock size for the largest 1000 sheep farmers in the country be?

Iv no idea what the largest sheep flocks in the country are but I’m pretty sure I read somewhere the average flock size is 400 of the UK’s 33million sheep that’s including lambs and rams…
