100,000 pigs to be destroyed

absolutely unbelievable comments from our leader

Very poor choice of words but you can sort of understand his point of view. He is saying it is up to the market to sort it and that the model used previously was broken. I think we can all agree the model relying on hordes of cheap labour was broken.

“So, Prime Minister, your plan as told to Andrew Marr this morning is for a higher wage, higher skilled economy in the long-term.
My question is why did you (The Tory party) not begin to implement the extra training which would obviously be needed for this after the 2016 referendum ?”

Is it the government’s responsibility to train workers?

Much of what has been said above may well be true. However, that doesn't help the victims in all of this, the independent producers that aren't part of a corporate set up.
At the end of the day, very many of those are suffering greatly and can't survive.
Whats your take on it all, I note that Pilgrims are advertising for skilled butchers at £13.48 an hour, rising to £20 for overtime. Ok money I suppose, but a tough and unlovely job.

Johnson deserves all the abuse he gets in my view, the mans a moral and ideological vaccum. But at the same time, these huge integrators make £millions in the good times, and always seem to have reams of well paid management, field staff with German company cars and so on riding round to check the farmer has filled out his paperwork etc. Yet when it comes to the bloke doing the grunt work, be it with muck fork or butchers knife, they plead absolute poverty?

Same in most industry now isn't it? Wealthy businessmen making millions to drive there Merc around and the people doing the work struggling to make a living at the bottom, never mind being able to save enough to retire. Country needs a serious look at the Capitalism/Socialism balance if it's to have any chance of maintaining an economy and Johnson is the last person who'll be doing that when he's never worked a day in his life.

If you think as the countries economy as a business, if doesn't manage its workforce, indirectly to produce skilled workers, it has to rely on outside workers, from other countries usually who can leave to go else where because the have no commitment, which is what it has been doing for years in some areas. We have a skills gap, its now bigger than it was two years ago. Its fine if you have the money to keep paying the market rate for imported labour, or you make do without.

Had to be kept quiet for obvious reasons but after the car crash interview with Boris on the Marr Show there’s vets farmers and allied industries protesting at the Conservative Party Conference this morning

Boris well and truly spoke straight from his posterior this morning on Andrew Marr, "the animals will die anyway".
Surely his "let them eat cake" moment that he will carry to his grave.
He really has highlighted his utter buffoonery.

He sounded less like a prime minister and more like a vegan activist. “The animals are going to be killed anyway”.

Johnson deserves all the abuse he gets in my view, the mans a moral and ideological vaccum.

I genuinely think the problems in the pig sector were a completely new revelation to him. He clearly had no idea of the unfolding situation, so had no soundbites up his sleeve to cover the awkward questions. He just didn't have a clue what the problems are.

Yes supply chains will fix themselves, but without government intervention it would take years, probably causing a reshuffle at the next GE.

speaking as a consumer I don't want any part of it

Don't forget that millions of consumers just want food to be as cheap as possible, to boost their disposable incomes so they have money to spend on things that used to be luxuries.

Part of the problem is chicken and pork
is far too cheap so you have to keep thousands
of them to make any money .
Agreed and point was made food too cheap by the spokesman for meat processors Friday night on Newsnight

very frustrating this TFF portal won’t allow videos directly uploaded

to see Newsnight and Marr Show videos go to @savegbbacon on Twitter , Facebook or Instagram

Any support you can give these independent pig farmers greatly appreciated

Very sad that this situation is so fast moving TFF is too slow to be able to post media etc. I'll do my best to post a report tonight but right now the Press Association needs things fast

I can tell you what, if this pig thing really is happening, and the system goes through the process of liquidating huge numbers of livestock, then I won't ever buy another bit of pork or chicken as long as I live. The bulk of it being sold today is utter carp anyway and it would suit me if I just ate less meat but stuck to higher quality/pricier beef and lamb when I did.
you're absolutely right. Only just found out they don't stun them before they go into the Co2 slaughter pen, so they die screaming.. I thought they were stunned first. Getting to the point where most of the food seems to be tampered with - apparently farmed salmon is fed a petrochemical that makes the flesh redder, otherwise it would be gray? Gm permissions now being given as well, it's just a few old men making a lot of money at the expense of the rest of us

The press are not interested, including the BBC. It would be better to find someone with a huge amount of Twitter followers, like Jamie Oliver to post video's. The way of the world is now that vested interests filter out anything that puts the government in a bad light.
The only reason we know about petrol shortages, at the pumps, is that its hard to hide a load of cars blocking roads.

Actually the BBC Economics Editor did a great piece on Newsnight Friday and Marr really pinned Boris on Sunday morning

Vicky Scott was first interview on BBC R4 Broadcasting House after news headlines too

Celebrity chefs , Clarson, Minette Batters all tagged and tweeted constantly along with Reuters, Sky News, Press Association
