My contact who eats stats for breakfast took a look at the same data link as you @spin cycle

His initial comment just in :

The numbers are not real. They are calculated from the numbers used for deadweeght price surveys against the accurate monthly DEFRA slaughter stats. The DEFRA slaughter stats are only available to August thus far. So the any data from the end of August onwards is subject to change.

Data for last 9 months

Jan and Feb are always low due to stockpiling at Christmas, but this is when we breed the pigs we now can't sell. It is clearly tailing off. But this only cover til august. The real sh!t storm is that it has continued to drop.

The issue is the data for the last 2 years isn't really representative due to lock downs. Whilst the AHDB "estimated" slaughter has gone up, the real number has likely dropped for the last few weeks.

It really begs the question, "Why the f@ck do the AHDB & DEFRA bother to put out figures that are not accurate?"

As @gone up the hill said, in an earlier post, the sheep and cattle figures are never very much to go by (probably not helped by some of us being a touch 'cavalier' with our census returns  )

i don't suppose he had any stats on the brexit labour shortage in the pig industry?

basically jp you've found a guy who you say 'eats stats for breakfast'...he rubbishes the ahdb figures and i'm supposed to believe it?

TBH if everybody wants to run around with 'torches and pitchforks' blaming brexit and the government then carry on......myself i tend to think the supermarkets ,fed up with their contract price being higher than EU surplus ,tried to wriggle out in june......then it was '100k pigs to be destroyed cos co2 shortage'.....the gov fixed that so they needed a new excuse....'blame a brexit labour shortage' cos everyone else does

the supermarkets caused this and the nfu IMO is helping cover it up

i've tried but TBH i'm done with this thread

edit...i wish i was done with this thread but i've a feeling i'm gonna have to defend myself :bag:

I think you are dead right. The supermarkets have got too used to paying peanuts. This is them kicking and screaming as they realise they are going to have to pay more.

Certain types (not you JP) are too happy to lie because it suits their agenda to not tell the truth.

Lets hope the GP and the supermarkets see sense and realise culling pigs and sending them to landfill is criminal just because they have gone a few kg's over weight. I had to laugh when the reporter seemed to say pigs have a shorter window to hit spec than beef cattle, he hasnt sent any over weight or overage cattle has he?!

No need to defend anything. Like I said he's waiting for more data (he's also reading this thread)

No matter for the farmers affected who are under contract but the processor is not taking the agreed level of pigs (25% down)
