previous govts closed a lot of our gas storage...we have the lowest in europe.....but imagine the greens and media frenzy if they'd kept them open  ...fracking was supposed to be the saviour but rightly/wrongly failed

uk gas comes from norway IIRC not russia.......but of course the EU shortage has driven price higher......EU has been slow approving a new russian gas pipe line and ,rumour has it, 'ticked' the russians off

Saw in Pig World online today that the breeding herd expanded by 5% in the 12
Months to June. Goes some way to explaining the current situation.

so expanding after brexit and during covoid

if pig farmers are on contract then the nfu should be lobbying to hold them to those contracts....are the supermarkets lobbying for more labour to help them keep to their contracts?

If they were on contract they should have made sure they had enough workers to process the contract
Who? The abattoir, the processor, the haulage company, in most jobs you only have to give a months notice, so when those pigs were planned perhaps there were enough staff. Even local councils are losing bin drivers to higher paid jobs. A lot of people went home because of covid, and dare I say it Brexit, and didn't come back, why would they when they could get work in the EU, with not visa hassle.
If its not Brexit, is it covid, and either way we were told not to worry our pretty little, scare mongering heads about it.

Perfectly true and should work like that BUT but like those energy companies that went bust when wholesale prices went up if those staff resigned, got other jobs, returned to other countries how do you counter that. Another factor are those increased pig numbers made up of extra overweight pigs on farm overdue for slaughter.

The net result of gross interference with an established “market economy”.
Whoever thought that implementing a poorly drafted “B” deal when other countries were already taking steps to mitigate the affects of CV-19 needs to be assessed by doctors under the 1983 mental health act.

How do you make sure of that? We have been told for weeks there is enough fuel, so if you are a bus, haulage company, or even trying to get to work, you either keep to your timetable, or what you are suggesting, 'panic' buy.
We have been a just in time economy for years, I ordered a stock of all my usual equipment before Brexit, just in case. How much freezer space would have been needed to store meat, just in case. There are no extra trained bodies to, 'panic buy', and if they had who pays for the extra unneeded staff, if there was nothing to worry about, as everyone was told.

I think it's pointless arguing with some

This thread is quite widely read in the pig farming community and I gather some in Government and it often gets mentioned to me

All I know is if I was an active pig farmer myself (can't be because of my day job) I'd be rolling my eyes at some of the comments on here. What's needed is action and now to alleviate the rollover crisis that's not of the farmer's making . Everything else is just froth or off topic by a country mile

If I bought 6 heifers of you that you that you didn't have room to keep this winter and agree to pick them up next Monday would you expect me to do that or would it be fine if I picked up 3 told you that I would pick up the other 3 in the spring as I didn't have any one to look after so many?
Suspect you would soon be on TFF saying what you thought of me.
Is it not reasonable to expect folk to do what they say ?

Nowhere has anyone mentioned a shortage of pork for either the retail or catering trade, all the chiller cabinets appear to be full. Are we being smokescreened by the processors who are looking for a way out of their commitments to the fatteners ? It certainly wouldn't be the 1st time the processors have Royally taken the pee

They have been going home for years because of two things , 1 more work at home as places like Poland thriving now !! And 2 the exchange rate, this was going on long before brexit and covid .
