100 acre fields

big field above 40 acres are 20% more efficient for some jobs
I have one 125 acre field when in beans it was 2 ha an hour more harvesting than any other field that year
8ha an hour compared to the others at 6 or less this field was enclosed in 1800 with the hedges removed in and redrained in 1982

one year when fert spreading it needed 500 kg less than the same area in 10 fields
with gps controls the saving on imputs is now much lower
with the 10 fields the area cropped is significantly less because of hedges with cross compliance we have 5 m between crops in the 1980s this was less than 2 m

the down side is that the first year I ploughed it after 2 days I had to work down the first 40 acres before it dried out took a day to plough the headland

now with notill it takes less than a day
now we have wider kit the smaller field have better crops as there is less turning the big fields were always ok even with 5 furrow plough or 12m sprayer
some times with smaller field you target to finish the field and get more done
rather than finish at a certain time

the environment would benefit if we had 100 acre fields with the equivalent area for the environment round the edges 100 acre field plus 10 acres for the environment would produce more food and more wildlife than 110 acres in 15 fields with hedges

AHDB has spent a small fortune on studying how to make us improve productivity post Brexit (a fancy, ambiguous, way of saying more efficient).

All the little farms with less than 100 acre fields will obviously need to be gotten rid of to become efficient.

Its back in one this year second wheat and third wheat,I merely watch over the hedge with curiosity. strange thing loosing land , what if the new farmer makes a better go of it than me  , but that sort of land is fickle with the weather and what an autumn it was for heavy land farmers.
Felt sorry for the 2 lads combi drilling the "lot 3" block, crawling across those hogs heads. I was quite surprised that 100ac block was left so long to be worked but there might've been good reason for it.

To contribute to the thread my biggest field is 27ac with an average of 16ac, handy in 1 sense as I can start and finish each field/block of fields in a day

Average field size here is about ll acres, largest i have is two fields both 25 acres. Got lost in an 1800 acre field with a combine in oz 17 years ago, finished for the night and always told to park off the field at the entrance, completely lost my bearings, so found the field edge, shone my lights one way couldn't see the entrance so decided to drive the other way along the field edge, i'm sure i drove over 3/4 the way around the field before i found the entrance :(

Been having a quick mooch around on Google Earth. Biggest field I have found so far (as in single-cropped, no internal boundaries, ditches, trees, buildings, tracks, obstructions, or anything else) seems to be about 230 acres. Near the coast in Lincolnshire, just to SW of Skegness. Any other contenders?

Have a 60 acre split across middle into 2 so I have (edit) 'a total of' 3x30 acre arable fields. Better @nick... ?

Average is just over 25 acres here.
One at 102, one at 100 that's mostly split in 2 and another at 90. All split over about 12 different blocks.
