Most straw trucks are either an 18m wagon and drag, or a unit with a 13.6m or 15.2m trailer.

When the shed is nearly empty you’ve either got to load / unload all outside and run to the back of the shed, or park the truck and load inside. For ease of use and safety its easier to drive in and turn than reverse in or out.

You need a concrete pad at the filling end, hardcore does inside the shed, so much cheaper to only fill from one end.

Running back and forth costs more in the long term so better to make it so you can turn a truck inside.

To do this with a 15.2m trailer you need 20m minimum, but at some point someone will hit the shed so you’re better off wider. This is where the 24m comes from for our sheds.

We debated going wider but then we wouldn’t be able to reach to fill them with a 535-95 in the middle so would be a waste. When full at the filling end you would then have a wider face spoiling too.

Worst record I can think on one particular farm is 6hrs to load a wagon and drag.Yet they want the same money for the straw as those that can load in 15 mins.

there are farms i have to split the wagon and drag and they tow the trailer in can barely turn the rigid round once in all because they put sheds up with out any thought

Depends on your how you stack them in. We stack from the open ends rather than through the posts, so in your example a shorter wider shed would suit us better.

Thats true, but wider spans cost more and a huge gable is expensive to sheeet

The pefect straw shed would be a monopitch open to the south, 200 ft by 50ft

Perfect straw shed would be 2000ft x 2000ft clear span 40ft the eaves with an automatic roller shutter door and a weighbridge insides. Might be quite expensive though.

Per square foot the extra cost is minuscule and easily paid for by the benefits it brings.

Surely it all depends on the size and shape of the site available. Ideally you don't want any of the open sides facing west or south, assuming that the prevailing wind (and rain) comes from those directions.

My straw shed is 27 x 36m, 6.6 to the eaves, concrete panel walls to 3.6m, sheeted all round, 4 louvres, 2 roller shutters and could store grain if it had a concrete floor. It is rodent, 2 legged rodent and future proof.
